just to add a thought to all this firmware talk, should 1.8 come out tomorrow, is it really worth it? wallpaper? how much time do you spend staring at it? print photos on selected epson printers? uh i have about 6 computers that can print on any of our 4 printers, thank you. But of course, dvd upscaling, i admit a big one, but only for hdmi TV's, may not be that great. Remeber- already you can access online with old firmware, and thanks to HackITandC's new R:FOM game firmware bypass, ask yourself if it's really what you seek!

But choose wisely....

this sounds like it's only going to be for ps3's with the ee engine removed

if that's the case then that's REALLY gonna suck. i'd love to see my dvd's and ps2 games upscaled but i guess this could be a good thing if it isn't meant for usa too, cause i'm in a holding pattern at 1.51 anyway

The firmware controls the EE so if they wanted to use software emulation for EE then the firmware just disables or plain bypasses the EE. Just because its there doesnt mean the PS3 is forced to use it.

man that dvd upscaled sounds nice, but 1.5 doesnt seem to have any set backs at the moment.

Now this makes more sense. I figured there would be more updates before a 2.0 hit the streets.

I'll wait to see what the "'host' of other enhancements" is before updating.

You mean "host" of enhancments with 1.80 or wait to see what 1.90/2.00 are about?

Anyone else know whether or not we can upscale games/dvds through component cables? Most of the information I've read thus far about this update states that this is only possible through HDMI!? :?? Hope someone tests this at lets us know, when the firmware is released.

With the upscaling, does that mean that those who own 720p HDTVs that don't accept 1080p are stuck with standard definition games and DVDs? Or do you think Sony has included the other resolutions? Based on the past issues, it's not unlikely that they could have "overlooked" this...

DVD upscaling most likely has to be done through HDMI, PS1/PS2 should be fine through component.
