Pinnock: Wipeout HD Motion Control a Challenge but it Feels Right

Daimion Pinnock, the WipeOut HD producer, has revealed it was quite a challenge to get SIXAXIS motion control in Wipeout HD.

Pinnock revealed that it is possible to just throw motion control into games although they spent the time tweaking it to ensure it felt right. He added that continuous feedback was particularly important to ensure motion control was beneficial to the actual gameplay itself and not just there for the sake of it. To quote:

WP: Let's talk about the motion controls. WipeOut, from its very earliest inception, has always supported analog control, but WipeOut HD is the first in the series to actually support motion controls with the SixAxis. How hard was that to get it right?

DP: Well, it was a challenge. It certainly was a challenge to get it in there. The main thing when you're going to have the SixAxis controller in there. I mean obviously, you can go in and put it in there, but we spent time tweaking it, making sure it felt right. We got a lot of internal feedback from QA, from everyone that put their hands on WipeOut.

We actually listened to them, got their feedback in there, and we really wanted to make sure that the public didn't feel that we put it in there just for the sake of having SixAxis motion control in there, but that it felt like something that you could actually use and something that was beneficial to the actual gameplay itself. i like the sixaxis, but not just spurted anywhere. The sixaxis should really be used in every racing game, not as default but at least in the options. for any person above 40 it really is better for those who don't have thumbs or just like the feel of really driving a car.
