Hope Fades for the PlayStation 3 as a Comeback Player

Here we go again... the Wall Street Journal aren't feeling too good about the possibility of the PlayStation 3 console's success.

In their latest article (linked above) they doubt it will come back and assert that the PS3 is sagging, while the XBox 360 and Wii are widening their leads.

They pick up on a number of factors including the PS3's price and lack of 'attractive' and exclusive titles.

To quote: With Stringer saying, 'We will be profitable,' you can't cut price," says Michael Pachter, a research analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles. He expects Sony to cut prices at the start of its new fiscal year in April, which could help boost sales.

Sony also is suffering from a lack of attractive titles that are exclusive to the PS3. Microsoft has hit the jackpot with two action-adventure game franchises, Halo and Gears of War, which are available only on the Xbox 360. Most of Nintendo's top games are Made in house and playable only on the Wii.

Sony used to have a stable of exclusive games. But in recent years, Microsoft has persuaded most game publishers to release highly anticipated games to it and Sony at the same time.

Last month, four of the five best-selling U.S. games were exclusive to either the Wii or Xbox 360, according to NPD. Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War from Activision Blizzard Inc. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version.

As a private investor and stock holder for tech companys Ive seen this before a lot, this "analysts" keep trying to beat down the stocks to buy them cheap when ever they can. The game changes later a couple of weeks or months later and they start praising their new god which they hated just a couple of weeks, days or months ago to sell into strenght. Dont be fooled by this kind of crap because thats what it is, just the media trying to hit companys a usual.

Sony could come back.... If they made the console cost $50. And I say that sarcastically obviously.

It doesn't really matter if they win. The only reason I care so much if they are selling good is because that means more games will be ported to the console, and it will have more exclusives.

Sony managed to knock Sega out of the console wars. Now they them selves are hanging by a thread. The reason Sony is doing better then Sega is because their console is Twice what the dreamcast was and it's sold more units faster.

I'm not too worried about them being in the next console race; And as for them not having the better line up of exclusives I say Bull! The Xbox has more games. but most of which no one wants to play.

I agree with the guy above me, fanboy's turn exclusives like VIVA PINATA just look at it on gametrailers, it ain't normal seeing a review for such a baby'ish game. I'm curious just to see how many of that game was actually sold..

Pff, it's just a matter of time before ps3 sells better then the xbox. The prices for a ps3 are now buyable and the ps3 is also so much better then the xbox, for example the bluray.....

selling close to 10million 2008 is good enough for ps3. Sony also sold something like 14 million PS2s and 13 Million PSPs.

friends xbox360 has been at the shop with circle of death 3 times, while I haven't had a single problem with my ps3 yet. If you want a blu-ray player which also plays games or just a game console is up to you. I paid $1000 for my ps3 and I'm not complaining.

Sony just isnt appealing to a large enough group. Its cost too much and this isnt the best time to be selling the most expensive game on the market.

I don't say it's good or bad, but this is the thing where I live: Sony will sell PS3s when they get pirated, period. Consoles (even the ones purchased officially from Sony) cost double the price than in USA, but it's worst with games, and games NEVER go to bargain, they keep the same price that at launch.

So, Sony will win when the PS3 joins with the Xbox 360 and Wii as a pirated console.
