Wow! Very cool. I'm also on FW1.8, but I'm interested on seeing how this progresses.

You will never be able to get PS3 games on DVD to run... because when the PS3 recognizes a game as a PS3 game, the laser of the Blu-Ray drive will switch to Blu-Ray mode instead. Also, you could do the swap trick and it will produce the same results.

That has already been answered... it's a Blu-ray Disc copied (because it fit) to a DVDR.

Similar to Bucks point above. Has this been tried with PS2 backups?

And your statement is based on what? Have you designed the ps3 ... :??

IMHO - PS3 fw is not taking care about ANY laser switching whatsoever and definitely NOT based on type of disk entered. It's controlled by fw of BD drive.

to hacked2123: Does it boot and RUN the original of that game this way? If yes it's great, if not it might be something related to the "wiping" of the disk described in the site news update.

"because as of yet the original will not boot", the problem from what i can gather seems to be the original 'formatting' stage, I think there is information missing which allows the boot process to continue (because of the format). This same LACK of information is allowing this disc to be read and TRY to boot!

I notice you had RR7, this game can be installed onto HD and I think that your procedure can run the game with ANY disc installed!!

You're half correct, they did state that (at the time anyway) Blu-ray disc checks were not present... however, the "thus it would be easy to run games from DVD-R" part isn't correct. They don't run games from disc (never stated they did), it's all done via HDD. I'm sure once this "IN" (the XMB Hole) is explored a bit more things will progress in that direction. For what it's worth, there is NO "disc swapping" involved in the method PDX uses... I believe I mentioned/confirmed that before here, but now I did again for the record. ;-)
