CodecSys CE-10 H.264 (English) Software Encoder for PS3 is out!

Approximately a month ago the Japanese CodecSys CE-10 H.264 Software Encoder for PS3 was released.

Today, bogaromi dropped by our PS3 Forums to let us know the English version is also now available!

Those interested can sign up for the free https://codecsys.fixstars.com/en/trial.html and the full press release is available below.

Additionally, an http://codecsys.fixstars.com/en/support/ce10/faq/faq.html?id=2 is available along with a list of http://codecsys.fixstars.com/en/support/ce10/hardware.html and http://codecsys.fixstars.com/en/support/ce10/license.html details.

Finally, an http://codecsys.fixstars.com/en/support/ce10/install.html is available and be sure to register the license key after the CodecSys CE-10 Professional Free Trial is installed.

The CE-10 software gets installed on a PC, but allows users to access the power of the PS3 via OtherOS as a way of accelerating video encoding.

Press Release: Affordable, Broadcast Quality, Near Real-Time H.264 Encoder for Sony PS3

LOVELAND, COLORADO, 1 July 2009 - Fixstars and Broadcast International today announce the immediate availability of CodecSys CE-10 series, a near real-time, broadcast quality H.264 encoder which runs on the Sony PLAYSTATION® 3 platform. The CodecSys CE-10 takes advantage of the readily available, inexpensive Sony PS3 for its processing engine, making it the most accessible, near real-time product in the HD encoding realm.

"The launch of the CodecSys CE-10 for PS3 marks a new era of professional level H.264 encoding at an affordable, consumer price," said Satoshi Miki, CEO of Fixstars Corporation. "This software based encoding system frees the video workstation from the burden of what is otherwise an intensive process. The user may continue to edit uninterrupted, while the PS3 produces high quality HD output in near real-time."

Connected to a PC via a gigabit ethernet, the PS3 performs as an external, dedicated video encoder. All encoding is handled by the PS3 which runs an embedded version of Yellow Dog Linux entirely from ROM, thus shifting the CPU-intensive processing away from the workstation.

Unlike hardware-based encoders on the market, the software-based CodecSys CE-10 is easily updated, delivering improvements to increase encoding speeds, image quality and other features. Reduce hardware costs by implementing updates rather than replacing out-of-date hardware.

"The CodecSys CE-10 addresses the biggest technology challenge we now face--video bandwidth," said Rod Tiede, president and CEO of Broadcast International, "The demand and popularity of video is growing at an amazing rate for both personal and businesses applications and the CodecSys CE-10 will significantly improve the production of video in all applications."

Cool

Ha! Indeed.

Here is the installer if anyone wants it, but of course unless you register for the Trial from the link above you won't have a 16-character License Key to use in it.

I tried this program a few days ago, and in my opinion it isn't worth it.

It is very restrictive in some respects:

- 512x288 (or 512x384 for 4:3) minimum resolution, 1080p max
- support for only a limited number of standard resolutions
- minimum of 500 kbps bitrate
- only a few configurable options

On the upside, it is pretty fast if your computer has gigabit ethernet, but quality definitely isn't up to the same standard as x264. Overall, if making tv, dvd, or bluray rips to standard resolutions, this solution can provide a great boost of speed (depending on computer speed) at some loss of quality. For portable devices it would be nice to have the option for lower resolutions and bitrates. For now I will keep hoping for an OpenCL or DX11 compute shader accelerated version of x264 sometime after the hardware is released.

How does this compare to the products that are now using tech like CUDA?

Sometime this week I'll be comparing encoding time between this, the open source x264 64bit edition, and hopefully Badaboom. The goal is doing a Blu-ray -> 720p AVCHD DVD+DL and I'll be only comparing the video encoding with the same bitrate.

Currently ripping Live Free or Die Hard to my HDD for processing atm.

Exclamation

I just received this via e-mail from Fixstars, bad news for PS3 Slim users apparently:
Quote:
The CodecSys Personal does not run on the new PlayStation 3 (CECH-2000A), because of software structure. Please use the previous PS3 (CECHL00 series or before) when using the CodecSys Personal.

The CodecSys Personal will continue to run on the previous PS3 in the future. Fixstars verified that the CodecSys Personal runs on the latest system software update version 3.00.
