V4 SCPH3004 Disc Read Errors
Ok Heres my story, Friend gave me his PS2 and im afraid its having boot problems. What happens is He was playing it the night before and the next morning he got DIsc Read Errors on Everything he tried. PS2 DVD, PS2 CD, PS1 CD, DVD Movie, Audio CD. Now i thought hey ill give it a try, Popped it open and Adjusted the Laser Angle, Eventually Getting it to boot Audio CD, PS1 Game, PS2 CD Game, Yet not PS2 DVD game and no Movie. *cries*, Now reading from places everywhere on the net, Ive come to find that not only can the Angle be wrong but the Voltage... Why does electricity hate me so much. Now can anybody offer me some advice on what I should do. New laser, adjust the voltage etc etc. Now Im not exactly Very good electronics i know my basics and such and I cannot afford or Get ahold of an Oscilloscope so count that one out. Any guys got any ideas. If need be I guess I could replace the laser but would that Solve my problems. Knowing that it reads both PS1 and PS2 Games (CD) So we can rule out any Motherboard Damage.
Thanks Guys Most Appreciated.
Peace out and God Bless

Only thing I could think of is adjusting the DVD Potentiometer underneath the laser, lots of guides on the net for this. It might give the laser a little more life, but sounds like the laser is on it's way out.

Yep, the laser will be dead very soon, I have just replaced two V4s like that and I have another 4 sitting here waiting for the next batch of lasers.

Well seeing that your in AU, goggle what you can for a dealer near you. v4 lasers run anywhere from $40-$60 US depending on a refurbished or brand new one. Try to get a 400C if you can.

ok quick question, my roommate got a v4 ps2 the othe day from a kid at school. it wont read any sort of dvd but will read cds, i tried tweaking the pot and the dvd pot. so from what i see on this thread, if a laser is out it can act this way? i just want to make sure so i dont waste time trying to tweak it.

Since it still reads cds you only have to set the dvd pot but mark the position of it first in case it doesn`t help, once you have the ps2 cover and dvd-rom cover off, power up ps2 and open tray and then turn power off again, this way it`s easy to work in the drive, before you try adjusting any pot, there is a white cog wheel in the middle at the back of the drive, this can be adjusted but mark it`s position also with a marker, this cog wheel raises and lowers the sled were your laser assembly sits on,turn this cog with tray open and turn it to you see the sled drop down which it will be at it`s lowest point, then just turn this cog wheel in either clockwise or anti-clockwise direction about 4 to 5 clicks at one time and then try loading your media and see if any inprovement has occured if not then just turn another 4 to 5 clicks and try again,do this procedure until you find the best loading position.
NOTE each time you try loading media to test it you must put the dvd-rom cover back on so that the disc stays in place, you don`t have to put the 4 little screws in the cover everytime you test just make sure in is sitting down in position and not sticking up at one corner, then once you are done setting then you can put the 4 little screws back in,but if you are going to do a laser setting then leave this cover off for the time being,i find this is the easiest but a little slower procedure for setting the pots, the pic supplied will be a overhead view of the dvd drive,on with dvd-rom cover off and tray open you will see two metal rails the only one you have to take the screw out of is the right rail toward the back of the drive which holds the rail down, once screw is taking out lift laser and rail together up slowly because the laser has a ribbon cable attached to it.
Then just slide the rail out of the laser and carefully flip it over and do your adjustment but a very little at one time and the put rail back through the laser and set rail and laser in place as you will see that the height screw just rides on top of the left rail and that`s how it sits, then put screw back in to hold the rail and laser in place and just set the dvd-rom cover on as descibed earlier and try loading the media,in your case you said dvd`s weren`t loading then just adjust the dvd pot only and for cd`s you would adjust the cd pot only. Then once done put everything back to together.Hope this will help you a little.

Also when you are taking out the rail and touching the rail it will take some of the lubricate that is on the rail off and the rail may get dry,and this will make the laser not slide as smooth as it should,so if this happens then just put a thin coat of white grease or equilent to it,also when you have the laser turned over you should check the laser gear which is the white plastic thing on one side which comes with the laser when you lift it up,check to make sure those two little notches are not worn down or dirty,if dirty then just clean them, also the spiral/worm gear that this laser gear rides along can also be lubricated if it needs it,sorry i forgot to put this in my earlier post.
