Playing PAL DVDs on a modded (region free) NTSC PStwo

Hey

I have 2 questions:

1) will the modded NTSC PS2 play a PAL DVD on an NTSC TV?
2) if it does play on an NTSC TV, would the DVD played at PAL's 25fps (thereby making the movie play 4% faster than it was originally intended) or would it play at 24fps using the 3:2 pulldown at normal speed?

Yes it will,i have a few games that i play and they are pal versions of the game,you have to go to this sticky and download the ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix.zip file which is in Tech Support Forum which this thread has been moved too,and use the patcher that is inside of the zip file to convert it over to ntsc so you can play it on your ps2,if you played it in it`s pal form it would just be a rolling picture and in black and white in most cases,sometimes it rolls with color.

But when you go to patch the image of which ever game you are doing set the Y-fix offset to 32 it seems to work the best i find,and choose the PN selector if you would like to,all this does when this selection is selected is it put a menu screen on your game just after the playstation 2 boot screen and you can choose a few differant selections like ntsc with y-fix and so on,but this isn`t necessary because it has been patched already and it should work that way,this is a little added feature to put in and it also seems to work also when you use the selections on that screen.

NOTE: pal versions even converted will sit lower the whole picture on your screen ,but games usually have a screen position setting in them,or you can set the Y-fix offset to a differant setting,but don`t go higher in the number as the screen will be lower yet and too low of a number might be to high in the screen,but 32 or the next number down or two down which will jump into the 20`s and this will raise the picture,also you will not be able to view this setting before you burn only after you have burned the game you will see the results as to if it is to high or to low,that`s why 32 is used the most.Hope info helps. :shades:

If it`s region free it should play out of region [Pal] dvd movies.

That patch ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix is used for converting pal ps2 games to ntsc only not movies though,and it will work with the swap magic 3.3, but the swap magic also has a pal/ntsc selector in it also which can be used for this. :shades:

TRABEL you are correct on those not playing out of region movies on the older modchips for sure,on some of the new ones i`m not positive now that you mentioned it that they might not be region free on movies,but i`m not 100% on that.Good point and i will have to find some info to be on the safe side if the newer chips indeed are region free for movies.But i think if you used dvd shrink or similar software yuo can select it to play in your region before you make your video_ts and audio_ts folders,which in the end you only use the video_ts folder only when you go to burn that movie and it should be watchable on a person`s ps2.

Okay i do get what mean,but if dvd shrink doesn`t work to correct a problem like that,then it wouldn`t be worth using dvd shrink to make it playable on a ps2 as it wouldn`t then,sorry about that info TRABEL then, it was just an idea.

Never got to play a PAL dvd on my NTSC PS2. Even with modchip it is an hardware issue.

That is confirmed qortizone as i found an article stating that even with dvd region x for the ps2 [NTSC] it will not play a [European] PAL movie on a NTSC ps2,which is kinda a bummer.

So it is possible to play a pal movie in a ntsc ps2.And they have both the pal version and the ntsc version of the DVD Region Free.

Due to technical limitations PAL DVDs can not be played back on NTSC PS2 machines. NTSC DVDs from every region work fine though. (2002-02-11)
