How to install a PS3 BD Drive into a PC? - PS3 NEWS

Alright guys.

My PS3 died recently and so it is now useless. I can't warranty it because its been modded and ran out of warranty long time ago anyways.

But I want to use whatever parts I can to my advantage

. One of them is the Blu-Ray player of course.

I am hoping to use it on my PC, can anyone help out with this process?

I checked out the PS3 BD drive pin-out by GodzIvan and found that the first 40 pins almost identically match that of an IDE. So it definitely looks like an IDE drive. The pins 41 to 60 are for external functions, like the LED light and eject button (which isn't on the PS3 BD Drive itself). So the 41 to 60 pins are useless for the PC.

Problem is though, how the hell will I connect the PS3 BD Drive to the PC? BD drive has 1 60 pin ribbon cable for data. And a small 4 pin power connector for power.

The ribbon cable is small and has very small flat pins on the cable, so how the heck will I connect it to the IDE connector so I can plug it into the motherboard?

Any help is appreciated.

Oh man, that looks near impossible. A normal CD drive for a computer utilizes an IDE cable and a 4 pin molex power cable.

You would be in for some heft modding to make that work. And then, even with that, I doubt you'd ever come up with some sort of a driver to have your computer even recognize the damned thing.

You were a LOT better off just to have forked up th $150 to have the thing RMA'd. But its too late now..heh...sorry.

I don't think BD from PS3 can fit into PC. sony must have modded it somehow to prevent cases like these. Can you please post a pic of the connector itself?

Try looking at fry's electronics for an integration cable or wiring harness. I don't know where you can find one but what it basically does is that on one end of the cable is connections for IDE and on the other end is the connection for the bluray player. Best of luck

To be absolutely honest, from what I recall you can't even swap BD-ROM drives between 2 PS3's...each are specific to the system (might be wrong, but I recall several failed attempts). That would make it impossible to put in PC. Sorry

This is all saying that it would work, which we don't know. You can take an IDE cable, chop off an end (use a 40 pin cable, they are easier to work with). Solder what wires you can into the vias, rest to the pins behind the FFC connector!

Is there any evidence of the drive being IDE, especially since the hard drive is known to be SATA?

hmm they did a good job. I'm sure if your handing you mold your own cable from their specs to a regular computers specs. then make a case for the drive itself so it's the set dimensions for pcs and modify it with the ps3's touch sensitive eject button.

You can use a PS3 drive from a different PS3 as long as your drive controller still works from your none working PS3 to swap to the working drive. If you can not use the drive controller from your broken drive then it will just not read the games, but for what he wants to do it should still read blu ray disks an so one. I am pretty sure that is right, at least from what I have been reading about replacing them. Also where is that pin out of the PS3 drive?
