DVD DREs

Recently I acquired a new laser for my ps2 (Scph-30001) and after installing it, games worked for about a day. I tried booting up a DVD the next day and got DREs for any DVD media. CDs work pefectly, but DVDs are a no go. I tried adjusting the height and everything, tried adjusting ohms, lowering the DVD one to around 900 from 1100, and nothings worked so far. I e-mailed the person I got the laser from and he insists that it's a height problem, and will fix it if I pay for shipping my ps2 back and forth. Now, I don't really want to spend that money if I'm just doing something wrong or overlooking something, so any help would be appreciated.

Also I noticed that when it tries to read DVDs the laser keeps trying to focus (makes a clicking sound over and over), I don't think the laser could be burned out, because I don't think I did anything to warrant that.

In any case, thanks for your help in advance.

Did you inspect the laser on the bottom side to see if the two beads of solder were removed before installing, these beads are for antistatic purposes when shipping but must be removed before installation, most are removed but some aren`t and if not removed can lead to laser or ps2 damage.Check this pic it will show the locations and the ticking sound may be due to the dvd pot not correctly adjusted or a laser not working properly, the pots and which direction to be adjusted is shown in the pic also, but the ohms should be left around 1100-1300 in order for the laser to read it correctly, especially with a new laser, unless they sent you a faulty laser.Hope info helps.

I checked out the bottom and didn't see anything in the places you mentioned, so I guess I don't have to worry about that. I set the dvd pot back to around 1100 and it didn't make any noticeable difference. How would I know if this is faulty or not? I've attached a picture I took of the underside of my laser just to make sure my eyes are ok. Oh and thank you very much starlight.

Okay the two spots seem to be unsoldered already so that should be okay, you might have to test the ohm resistance in the coils in the laser to see if they are good this will tell if the laser is good or not. Here is some pics and info on how to do it.

Thumbs up

Also check this pic as there is a white cog wheel at the back of your dvd-rom drive and this can also cause DRE`s,sorry that i forgot to put it in my earlier post.
