Question Does playing backup DVDs damage PS2?

Hi. I just got a PS2 v50004 with Messiah2 chip. I'm thinking to play games from backup DVDs but some people told me that playing backup DVDs damages the PS2 lens. Is this true? I'm sorry if this is asked before but I checked the sticky forum and tried to search and I couldn't find anything about this. I'd be glad if you could me enlighten about this.

If you use good quality media, and keep your disks in good condition you should be fine. Seems like you either have a v9 or v10 PS2. Can you confirm this? There is something called the v9/10 LA Syndrome mainly with PAL PS2's to include the earlier 5000x models, to where the LA chip would burn out killing the laser, but you can protect yourself even further by doing the "romeo mod" (info on the net) where it takes the 12v power down to 5v.

I've been playing backup discs on my slimline PStwo for over 3 months now.

The media I use is genuine Ritek G04 DVD-R as well as Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's. I've had no issues with backups and my laser has shown no sign of getting weaker.

I'm pretty sure you should be fine.

However, do know that your PS2's laser WILL give out on you someday. It's just the nature of the beast. It doesn't matter if you play backups or not. These things just have a lifespan, so just expect it. Could be years from now, could be next month. Hahaha!!!

Using good quailty media is a must if you what your laser to last longer, but backups do put more stress on the laser which is a known fact, but keep in mind some people will get better consoles than others even in the same model no.These other members might have gotten a good console, but that doesn`t necessarly mean that you got one that isn`t going to be trouble free, each console is differant in that respect,so just keep that in mind, and example is a member and his friends and relatives got a total of 5 slimline PSTwo`s this last christmas and all 5 consoles the laser burnt out on and only one was modded the rest weren`t,but they are making the laser`s better than the first batch of slimline PSTwo`s,but a fix is kinda recomended but the decision is up to you,or there are some chips with laser protection already built into the chip.G.L.

Goes back to my earlier post, some people had good luck while others didn`t,but that`s awesome Jackass57 if you v9 is still going strong even without doing the romeo mod as you have seen on this site the problems with v9 and v10 ps2`s. I`m just trying to make sure that members know both sides to backup putting more stress on the laser and some consoles handle it good while other`s don`t handle backups very well leading to laser burnout, and on the v9 and v10 also leading to the LA chip being burnt,i`m just being honest and not trying to discourage anybody.

Yah, my v9 is still going strong, and even with DMS4 EZI modchip in it, without romeo mod. I'm a stickler when it comes to my media disks. It's all hit & miss as you all know

Is the Romeo mod necessary on unmodded V9s?
If I remember correctly it was an issue only when they were modded right?

There were a few that had problems, this problem all started because sony got another manufacturer to make the mb for the v9v10,v11 ps2`s and they left one critical component out on them, can`t remember what is was called at the moment, but this component was there to keep the LA chip from getting overheated and evenally burning out, and this was due to the laser having to read harder when loading backups and heating the LA chip up and poof, that is why that component was so critical, maybe sony made it that way so to burn out if backups were going to be loaded in the console, but this is just my take on that sony making it that way on purpose. But mostly it was a cost cutting measure and that`s why the price was dropped at the time they were released. :shades:
