Honestly, the DMS forums and good soldering skills is all you need. A multimeter might help too.
Basic rules:
- have all the tools you need first
- don't bridge any points
- don't make your wires look like spagetti
- don't make your wires too long
- Strip only as much wire as you need
- use a low watt soldering iron, fine tip
- follow the diagram
Always plan ahead of course. Figure out the best position for the chip. Look at installs that others have done. If you don't think you can do what they've done then I would just give up right away. The best way to learn is from others.
