Hey, I have had a gamecube since release and I just decided I want to mod it. Can anybody give me any suggestions on which chips to use.

Can I rip GCN discs with the viper chip USB port? Supposedly I you can but I've never heard of an actual person doing it and only use the usb port to flash the chip.

Suggestions for cases (full size dvds) Should I wait a little while (no real rush) so that prices will go down because of the release of revolution?

Wait and mod revolution? (backwards compatbilty)

thanks!

If all you want to do is play backups, I would highly recommend the XenoGC modchip. They are around $20 and install really easy.

As for ripping via USB, I don't think that is accurate. The only way to rip your own games is by getting a GC BBA (Broadband Adapter) and using a program to rip the disk into a ISO. I don't know how streamlined the effort is on Viper or Qoob chips, but it is fairly difficult to do with softmods or a XenoGC. I would just recommend you downloading backups of games you already own (legal!) on USENET or something...

As a matter of fact you can use the viper extreme chip to copy games from the GC to the hard drive via USB 2.0. Thats what I do. It takes about 20 mins to transfer and another 8 minutes to burn it at 8x. Works everytime. I dont know about the other chips, but the viper extreme works great for me. Thats What I would suggest for your "backups".

It'll probably be a while before a chip comes out for the Rev. The Viper chip is only about 50 bucks. It'll pay for itself in no time. Plus its very easy to install. The chip only has 4 wires and the points are big compared to the ps2 and xbox mods. I think its worth it.
