Microsoft is currently seeking "multiple thousands" of testers for an Xbox 360 system update preview program. Unlike previous previews, which were for upgrades to the 360 dashboard, this one includes physical items being sent to participants -- it's intended to help Microsoft "prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format."
No further details were offered about exactly what the new format is all about. Things will be kicking off in the next two weeks, so those who apply should be receiving a notification by email fairly soon if they've been accepted. You must be an Xbox Live member located in the United States in order to participate; being an Xbox Live Gold member will give you a better chance of getting in.
Those who are accepted will receive a copy of Halo Reach "along with other possible rewards." Interested Xbox 360 owners can apply for the preview program here ([Register or Login to view links]).
Some new info : board.gulli.com/thread/1646228-updated-xbox-360-disc-format/ (original source Major Nelson alias Larry Hyrb's Blog.
No new dvd system xgd3.. today by Major Nelson aka Larry Hyrb officially announced on his blog that the new disc format with the upcoming Spring 2011 Update keep entering. In fact, Mr. Nelson is not at all further into the disc format, but "sold" its update as "great" and "new". In the end, but just this little information crucial.
To as many U.S. citizens (this is the preview program is limited) to attract any participants in the Preview Program a copy of Halo Reach is promised. (Copy in this case refers more to a download code for Xbox Live). Furthermore, it is mentioned that this is a test for many thousands of users. Not to any stress tests, but rather as many "guinea pigs" have, with all different kinds of Xbox and drives.
Now you ask what it is exactly? Microsoft will introduce the so-called XGD3 disc formats from around late April / early May. Currently, the XGD2 (Xbox Game Disc 2) formats in use. The disc image will always have a fixed size of about 6.8GB net and as such are limited to this maximum limit. The format offers something XGD3 about 1GB more memory (also net) and reached thus roughly 7.8GB. This 1GB available to developers of course.
However, this new hash checks and anti-piracy measures are used. This XGD3 disc image (if one can read in the conventional way), can be burned to a commercially available double-layer discs, because they are outside the size capacity. During pressing of the discs in the press shop are virtually forced validation data to the extreme edges of the disc, which on the one hand, the verification, on the other hand, as an anti-copying system, since these sectors are not to describe blanks, not to mention the fact that Brenner these do Au▀nahmesituationen can only describe.
