June 21, 2007 - Previously regarded as a PC-only real-time strategy game, Sierra announced today the title will also be available for the Xbox 360. Swordfish Studios is handling the development on the console side with the aid of Massive Entertainment, the team responsible for the PC version. No specifics are available as to the nature of the console control scheme, but the press release mentioned there will be, "a new heads-up-display (HUD) that is more functional and appealing for console gamers."
Sierra Entertainment, the game's publisher, believes World in Conflict to be a natural fit for consoles. "World in Conflict is the natural fit for Xbox 360, as it effectively blurs the lines between strategy, action and first-person shooter, making controlling units and issuing orders quick and easy on the console controller," said Al Simone, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Sierra Entertainment.
This may be true since World in Conflict's gameplay focuses on small groups of units, as opposed to the large armies and complex resource and base management mechanics in other RTSes. Set in a 1989 fictional war scenario, World in Conflict follows the story of Soviet aggression into Europe and their surprise attack on American soil. NATO serves as the game's third faction, playable only in the game's Domination, Assault, and Tug-of-War multiplayer modes that can support up to 16 players.
