Why Mass Effect 2 Won't Be Coming to Sony's PS3 Console

    Sponsored Links
With the news surfacing about BioWare - who is now wholly owned by Electronic Arts - formally announcing Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 and PC, it has become rather obvious that this wasn't heading to the PS3 and here's a few possible reasons why.

First of all, back when BioWare wasn't owned by Electronic Arts, Microsoft had already published the first game for the Xbox 360 with intentions (much like Gears of War) to maintain a new franchised trilogy for the Xbox brand. People can argue semantics, publishing and trademark rights all they want, but consider Col. Sheppard the tertiary mascot next to Master Chief and Marcus Fenix.

It was reiterated time-over and again that Mass Effect was going to be an Xbox 360 trilogy. And even while Casey Hudson denied plans for a PC rendition of Mass Effect in an interview with Gamer 2.0, it was obvious the big bad MS wasn't going to let gold slip through their fingers...especially considering that the Games for Windows platform is utter crap and needed something good in its library.

The fact that Hudson lied about the PC version could prompt some gamers to believe that Mass Effect 2 could still be heading to the PS3. However, the difference is that the game was already designed from the ground-up for the Xbox 360.

Realistically, PS3 owners wouldn't get their copy of the game until 2012. By that time BioWare would be starting (or finishing) alpha code for the third game. Would it really be sensible to port over a game that old to a system that's already selling less third-party software outside of Japan, than the 360?

You can call it PS3-bashing but it's just reality, folks; sales for Turok, Blacksite Area 51, Grand Theft Auto IV and Smackdown Vs. Raw prove this. Heck, anyone who follows NPD data (which is due out soon for the month of February) knows this.

The reality is that there's just not enough incentive for BioWare to port over a game that wasn't designed for the other console in the first place. EA is obviously aware of this; it's no different than Sega keeping Yakuza 3 on the PS3, since that was the system it was designed for, originally.

It would take too much money, time and resources to port over a game that already has a niche install-base on a specific platform (i.e., Square's wasteful efforts to get Final Fantasy XIII on the 360).

Now it would be shocking if EA decided to have BioWare release Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 a few years later. At this stage in development, though, it's highly unlikely.

Same thing could've been said about Ninja Gaiden 2 which was published by Microsoft Games Studios and thus said that it would never come out on PS3 and 9 months later it's been announced that it will come out as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. I expect a Mass Effect 1+2 package soon enough due to the fact that game studios are now more aware of the conditions to port a game from one console to the other, especially now that a PC port has been announced. Square Enix said that FFXIII could be ported to the 360 easily because it was designed on a PC (Although I really doubt we will see the game until 2011 at the earliest if the 360 port goes smoothly or much later if it doesn't).

At the very least I would expect Mass Effect 1 on PS3 soon with Part 2 a year away for exclusivity issues.

Let's face it as expensive as it would be to port the game it would be even more expensive to make a new one from scratch so game studios have to take advantage of the assets already created and cash in on them even if the ammount of sales is less than half of what it sold on the other console (Although Resient Evil 5 proves that to be a low number with 55/45 Xbox to PS3 sales ratio).

EA ported (badly) the Orange Box even though Gabe Newell hated the PS3 with the anger of 1000 suns. Bioware might not have reason to port Mass Effect to PS3 but I bet EA does.

Great post otarumx, +Rep for you .

I agree completely. Especially with a 2010 release date, we have plenty of time for announcements on the development of this game pretaining to which console it will be on.

Explaining that the game is 'made' for the Xbox 360 is somewhat redundant in my mind because, as we've seen, many games have been moved around from console to console. Bioshock, Saints Row 2, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden, etc.

The only thing I didn't understand was your reference to RE5 sales... Maybe I was reading it wrong.

About the Re5 sales I got a little carried away with data from Chart Track for England, according to this data RE5 has sold 55 percent of its total sales on Xbox 360 and 45 percent on PS3 Im sure that in Japan the PS3 sold much more and in the US the 360 version outsold the Ps3 by a wide margin.
