Rumor: No Modern Warfare 3 from Infinity Ward, 360 Timed DLC

According to a VG247 (linked above) source, Infinity Ward is not creating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and is instead working on something "completely new."

It's unclear where the third game will be made if IW really has gone AWOL from the series.

Additionally, MW2 DLC packs are scheduled to release this "spring" as a timed 360 exclusive.

To quote: "Right now we don't have a clue what our next game is going to be, and we won't know what it will be until we finish with Modern Warfare 2, which won't be for a while," studio frontman Rob Bowling told IGN UK.

We were told by one dev source that a Canadian studio was handling it, but another pointed to newly-formed Sledgehammer Games, headed by ex-Visceral bosses Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey.

Sledgehammer, based in the Bay Area, is currently recruiting for a multiplayer designer with "five years experience working on current AAA multiplayer shooters for current consoles and PC."

The identity of Sledgehammer's first project is yet to be announced. Activision's only Canadian developer is Vancouver-based Radical Entertainment, the studio behind last year's free-roaming adventure, Prototype.

Good news IMHO, because I don't want modern warfare (the theme in general) to become too quickly worn out just as happened with WW2. However, I have read somewhere while surfing the web that IW is supposedly working on releasing a COD focused around Vietnam for November of 2010.

I can try to find a link or some more info if anyone is interested. They should also take their time with MW3 if you ask me, and focus in on how the gaming community would want to improve it. I've got several options I would like to see added :]

Don't try. IW has never released any games in subsequent years, and Activision's franchise structure between software houses prevents that. Many months ago, an employee leaked that Treyarch has got this year's COD entry covered, and simply referred to it as "Call of Duty 7". They probably didn't have a real title at the time. After that, I'm guessing Sledgehammer or whoever is handling MW3 will put it out, although I wouldn't mind another year of delay, seeing a 2012 release.

I don't know how quickly the setting of "modern warfare" can wear out, as it's been banged at for well over half a decade now and there have been many more games with that setting compared to those with the WW2 setting. Myself, I don't think I can get tired of it, since I play these games primarily for the modern weapons that I love.

Yep.. Plus the Vietnam based COD is being developed by Treyarch.. not Infinity Ward.

I would say that the fact that MW3 is not gonna come out just makes me wanna cry... the stealth missions would make me go berserk.

Both MW1&2 were very nice and killed almost every other shooter out on the market. The storyline and gameplay was beautiful. But the stealth mission in MW1, "All Ghillied Up" & "One Shot One Kill" was probably the best fps level i've played in my life....The problem was that MW1&2 were so short. I was hoping for a long MW3 edition...

In my opinion, I hope COD7 is neither a futuristic shooter like GRAW nor a WW1 or WW2 based game like many of the previous games of the COD series.

I think the vietnam version of cod will be all too similar to the battle of Peleliu of world at war (especially with the flamethrower and guerrilla tactics of the vietnamese) however the agent orange and napalm would be an interesting story point i think

i agree with the general consensus that a modern warefare 3 would be too early to announce or start development on (mw1 came out in 2007 and the online community there is still strong) and so the team would be spreading themselves far too thin by moderating 3 online communities and dealing with the games maintenance (fw updates)

the M$ timed dlc doesnt surprise me, and sony has taken a respectible "dlc is never 'exclusive'" approach and saved themselves some money for the sake of a few months

i'm mainly intrigued by the statement of IW working on something "completely new" and hope that its as wel developed as the MW series

I have to agree with you on that, those missions where pretty kickass in my opinion, best missions Ive ever played. Also MW2 gameplay was a blast and so was spec ops on MW2, even though they dont have a story those missions are just pure fun and mayhem. The stealth missions on the spec ops are also very very well crafted and Id recommend you to play them.
