[IMGW]http://media.1up.com/media?id=3295657[/IMGW]Very little gets internet uber-geeks more pumped than the promise of [Register or Login to view links], the upcoming episodic game based on the popular web comic [Register or Login to view links]. As if trying to actually give us nerd types a heart attack made of pure lust, developer Hothead Games announced today that legendary adventure game creator Ron Gilbert is working with the teamon the Penny Arcade game.
If you've never heard of Ron Gilbert... for shame. This is the man who has helped create such classics as Maniac Mansion and the first two Monkey Island games. He's also the creator of SCUMM, the engine that powered both of the previous titles, as well as a ridiculously large number of PC adventures in the '90s. It's good news, in other words. Gilbert was also excited about the deal:
"I have been a fan of Penny Arcade because I have always found their comic so funny and biting. When I first heard theywere making a game and that they had chosen to weave adventure game elements into it, I knew immediately I wanted to be involved. Working with the Penny Arcade guys and the team at Hothead has been an absolute riot."
Meanwhile the Penny Arcade guys seem to be as stoked as nostalgic gamers certainly will be. Jerry "Tycho" Holkins remarked that he "can hardly believe it." An update on the site by Mike "Gabe" Krahulik documents the wonders of working with Gilbert:
"We had our first meeting with Ron pretty early in the design process. Tycho and I were getting the story fleshed out and we had some ideas about the design and over all pace of the game. We laid it all out for Ron and then he picked up a whiteboard marker and started teaching class. I'm not sure how many people can say they got a game design 101 course taught by Ron Gilbert, but that's exactly what Tycho and I got that day. His insights into the way you move the player through an interactive story so that they get to explore the world but don't loose the narrative were incredible. He was drawing diagrams and helping us really visualize the game in a way that had never even occurred to us. We're ridiculously lucky to have him on board and helping us with On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One."The post also contained some great concept art for the game (pictured) and the news that gamers should finally start getting in-depth previews around the end of this month.
