Matsushita to release Blu-ray DVD drive for PCs

Matsushita is set to release new DVD drives for personal computers in compliance with the Blu-ray format.

Matsushita will begin commercial production of the drives in fiscal 2006 and may supply them to PC makers of the Blu-ray group such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

Matsushita has so far produced such drives only for display at trade fairs and other reference purposes as talks have been under way to unify the Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats so as to avoid confusion among users.

But as the two sides have remained wide apart, Toshiba plans to release a DVD player of the format at the end of this year.

Sony, which leads the Blu-ray group along with Matsushita, plans to adopt the DVD technology for its PlayStation 3 game console.

While Matsushita has already released home-use DVD players of the Blu-ray format, it plans to put successor machines on the market in fiscal 2006.

25GB single layered and 50GB if dual layered,and down the road they are planning to add more layers as this will give it 25GB for each layer they add.

Not really as this post indicates a way to keep cost down on the production of Blu-Ray disc.

yeah like always when new technology standards are introduced to the public, their prices will be extremely high early on, but in time prices will drop dramatically

Yeah, I remember my first CDRW, it was like $200, and was 4x2x24 (still got it too, though it dont burn no more!)

my first 4x cdrw was also $200 and still works. I remember my friend bought one in '97-98 and he paid like $300-500 I think. His was a 2x burner.

So yes with time anything drops in price. I bet the ps2 will be 99.99 when ps3 comes out.

Yes the price of new technology,but hopefully the price won`t be to high for the media,but the Blu-ray writers themselfs that could be a little costly.
