There is also The Firmware Umbrella (thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com) that can save your SHSH files on your PC if you want a local copy.

basically what they mean by saving your shsh blobs is that in case you update your firmware of your ipad/iphone/ipod etc by mistake. you will be able to downgrade again to the firmware which you are currently on.

what saving the shsh blobs does is, it saves your unique key or something on cydia's server or something not sure so that when you downgrade it tricks itunes into checking that website for your key and allows the downgrade to proceed.

in a short, no you do not have to save your shsh blobs however it is advised in case you do something stupid and update the firmware which doesn't have a jailbreak.

Please note that you should ALWAYS back up your non-jailbroken Iphone in iTunes! It's better to be safe than sorry!
