E3 2013: XBox One to Launch in November at $499, New Halo in 2014

79w ago - Following up on their initial unveil and pricing speculation reports, today Microsoft officially confirmed that XBox One will launch this November at $499 alongside a new Halo coming next year!

Below are the details from Microsoft's Live E3 2013 Conference complete with a Halo 5 XBox One E3 trailer, to quote:

"Microsoft today told the world’s gamers when they’ll be able to get hold of the latest and greatest Xbox, and how much they’ll have to pay for the privilege: this November, and $499, respectively.

Though the Xbox One’s holiday-season launch timing is standard for new consoles, the price surprised many onlookers. Pundits including Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter had predicted a $399 debut, in line with the Xbox 360’s premium edition at its 2005 launch.

Microsoft also took the opportunity to dive further into the console’s innovative online features. The Xbox One’s DVR features go beyond just recording TV; it’ll automatically record key gameplay moments, and let you add commentary and titles before uploading them to social media or other sharing services. Live streaming of your games is also possible, thanks to the Xbox One’s integration with up-and-coming streaming TV service Twitch.

But the Xbox One’s software capabilities weren’t the main focus of Microsoft’s press conference. Instead, the company unveiled a veritable avalanche of in-development Xbox One games, ranging from a creative, kid-friendly riff on Sony’s LittleBigPlanet series to a violent and gory action game set on the battlefields of ancient Rome.





"We have more titles in development now than in any other time in Xbox history,” Microsoft Game Studios vice-president Phil Spencer said. Among the titles Microsoft demonstrated were new episodes in the Metal Gear, Battlefield, and Dead Rising series, together with versions of PC hits World of Tanks and Minecraft.

Although the Xbox One will launch without a Halo game, Master Chief fans won’t have too long to wait. 343 Studios’ Bonnie Ross introduced the next installment in the game, which will continue the “Reclaimer” story that began in Halo 4. It’ll be launched in 2014, Ross said.

The next game in the critically acclaimed Forza Motorsport series also made its debut. Turn 10 Studios’ Dan Greenawalt took the stage next to a polished and shiny Mclaren sports car to introduce Forza 5’s new “Drivatar” feature: a software simulator that’ll learn your personal driving style and can recreate it on demand.

“The next generation is about more than polygon count.” Forza’s creative director told the crowd. “While you’re at work or school, your Drivatar races against the world. And when you log in again, you earn credits for your Drivatar’s work.”

And Call of Duty? While this historical Xbox 360 powerhouse franchise wasn’t on show today, there was still plenty to make CoD fans smile. Respawn Entertainment, the studio formed after the mass exodus of Infinity Ward staff from publisher Activision in 2010, finally took the wraps off its first title, the spring-slated shooter Titanfall. Featuring giant robots, capture-the-flag style battles, and all the trademark explosive thrills of the Call of Duty series, it’s looking well placed to capitalize on the stagnating shooter market.

Even the venerable Xbox 360 - now, in its eighth year, older than many of its fans - came in for some love. A redesigned “smaller, sleeker, quieter” version of the console goes on sale today. Xbox Live Gold subscribers will enjoy a series of free game downloads over the next few months, beginning with Assassin’s Creed 2 and Halo 3 this month.

Microsoft also plans to remove two of the major irritations with the Xbox Live service: its 100-friend cap, and its “Microsoft Points” currency. In future Xbox Live members will be able to have as many friends as they like, and transactions on the Xbox’s online store will be made in real currency."





Finally, in related news (via kotaku.com/hacker-superdae-releases-1-7tb-trove-of-gaming-info-512262908) today hacker SuperDaE released a 1.7TB trove of gaming info with details as follows:

Next gen hacker SuperDaeE, who breached Sony, Microsoft, Epic, Valve, Blizzard and other gaming companies, just released a 1.7TB treasure trove FTP download. The files, however, are apparently encrypted. Previously, SuperDaE vowed he would release said files, which are believed to contain sensitive information about unreleased games, should he be arrested.

SuperDaE, whose real name is "Dylan" and who is an Australian citizen, announced earlier his plans on sister site Gizmodo. SuperDaE leaked loads of accurate new info to Kotaku about the then unnamed Xbox One and PS4 earlier this year. Earlier today when the FTP went life, SuperDaE tweeted, "Insurance up."

As Kotaku first mentioned last month, the "insurance file" supposedly contains material grabbed by SuperDaE's hacks into Gears of War and Unreal Engine developer Epic, World of Warcraft studio Blizzard, Sleeping Dogs dev house United Front Games and the now-shuttered publisher THQ, among others.

The FTP also apparently contains software development kits for the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U as well as possible old code for unreleased games such as Company of Heroes 2 and WWE 14. The Epic directory includes folders for Unreal Engine 4 and UE4 projects called Fortnite (an announced game), Kilo, Lima and Orion.

When asked via Twitter what the FTP contained, SuperDaE replied, "Enough files to change the video game industry for better."

The encrypted file is currently live on SuperDaE's site (noted by LevelSave and NeoGAF). SuperDaE's Web site (superdae.se) also has an Australian bank transfer number and a BitCoin link. Currently, it's unclear how the downloader gets the seemingly necessary key to open the file.

Recently, Kotaku reported that SuperDaE, a 17 year-old minor, was facing an array of eight legal charges, including "possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia", "possession of a prohibited weapon", "possession of identification material with intent to commit an offence", and "possessing and copying an indecent or obscene article, possession of child exploitation material".

Last Kotaku heard SuperDaE was out on bail. When Kotaku asked SuperDaE what would trigger the "insurance" file's release, the Australian hacker replied, "My inability to access a computer."

This system is a joke and there is zero chance of me owning one. It's been stated that this will effectively kill second hand games. It is nothing more than a transfer mechanism. And if game installs are mandatory, a puny 500 GB drive isn't going to hold that many games.

Although I'm sure you can purchase a hardware upgrade through MS only. No renting, no bringing a game over to a friends house, no having two consoles in the house (one for you and one for the kid) without purchasing that game more than once. No thank you. Also, always on internet requirement.

They claimed it wasn't, but the system needs to be able to check in at least once every 24 hours, so it really does have a requirement. You can keep this piece of junk, this is one future I won't be supporting.

At the rate we are going, the next generation of consoles will have retina scanners to even power the system on, and fingerprint readers on the controllers to make sure you don't hand it over to a friend to play if they haven't purchased it. Nice end run around the first sale doctrine also sleaze balls.

To be honest, between the DRM schemes and (in my personal opinion) completely useless TV related features, the PS4 is looking better already.

We all know Microsoft loves to charge for everything, so it will be interesting to see how many of the features they are showing will require some type of paid subscription.

Hardware wise they are similar enough that I don't see one or the other having a noticeable advantage. The simple and well known architecture should allow third party games to look much closer to first party games.

I got to say this is the ugliest console I've ever seen though. It looks like a black DVR you might get with DirectTV or something. I just hope the PS4 has a bit more style than that.

I watched the broadcast and it does have a lot of cool features, but the biggest problem is that those features will require and Xbox live gold membership. Nothing is free when it comes to Microsoft. I have several Xbox 360s and I can't even watch YouTube videos without having a gold membership. It will be interesting to see how many of those features you'll be able to use without having to pay for a gold membership.

The 8GB of RAM in the Xbox will be DDR3. The PS4 will have 8GB of GDDR5. That doesn't mean the PS4 will be better, both consoles are very close to each other spec wise.

In the end it will come down to the games, services and needs of the consumer.

So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

Networking Requirements

To ensure Xbox One works optimally and can offer the experiences described above, it is designed with the following networking requirements:


  • (*4)For an optimal experience, we recommend a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps. (For reference, the average global internet connection speed as measured recently by Akamai was 2.9 Mbps). In areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband.
  • While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection.
  • (*5)With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.
