6GHz Plus: Overclocking the E8600 with Liquid Nitrogen

311w ago - CustomPC writes: We recently had the chance to test Intel's latest overclocking-friendly CPU, the Core 2 Duo E8600, at Amari's labs near Watford.

Not content with merely wowing us with their Dream PCs 2008 entry - the fantastic submersion-cooled XCP - Amari provided the facilities to overclock the E8600 with liquid nitrogen.

Custom PC was aided by two of the UK's best-known overclockers from BenchTec, Sacha35 (Paul Watkinson) and Bazx (Barry Wynd), where we cooled the chip to a chilly -120C and achieved some truly impressive clock speeds and benchmark results.

Video and speed results can be seen linked above!

Well i have a e8400 cpu core 2 duo with a new asus mb which i haven't got the mb in yet, but will be interesting to see what i can get out of the e8400, no near speed of 6 Ghz but will see what i can push it to..

sure, 100% overclock is something fantastic.the heat produced could even melt the cpu without the right cooling system i guess what level of overclock could be reached using Peltier cells. they are particular plates used to cool in extermely fast way professional devices like lasers or thermocameras moving the heat using electric field. maybe using a combination of both systems (Peltier+nitrogen) we could reach an extemely high level of overclock

No, apparantly you dont

6Ghz is an INSANE level of overclock, a gain of alsmost 100%. On air youd be lucky to hit 10% with the stock cooler and maybe 20% with aftermarket air cooler. Water makes it hit the 30-40% mark, then Liquid nitrogen takes it to 100%. I wanna see this thing on Phase or Dry ice myself, thatd be AWESOME, if i can make it hit 6ghz with my phase box im TOTALLY buying it.

A good aftermarket air cooling solution can give you enough power to go 50%+ OC, provided you get a good chip that will not need to much voltage to hit high FSB. At least that's true for the Intel C2D/C2Q lineup. I personally had a Q6600 and an E6750 clocked to 50%+ OC on air for short periods of time without hitting thermal limits of the Intel chips that shuts down the board. I'm not as lucky with my current Q9550, most I can get with that without getting that unsafe feeling while monitoring temps is 30% (just short of 3.7ghz).

6 GHZ is fast, but its only double what most top end processors run at right now. It just seems like its not as big gain as you really could get with such extreme cooling, but i'm not overclocking pro, so i guess I dont know that much!
