The new version of YDL was released. I think the most important new feature is that you can now use the memory of the RSX-GPU as a swap partition.

You should notice a great increase of speed while using linux.

The free version can be downloaded in four weeks. For now only owners of YDL.net Enhanced Accounts can access YDL 6.1.

SuperTux 2 is free software, a classic style 2D jump and run game inspired by the Nintendo Super Mario series. It was originally created by Bill Kendrick and is currently maintained by the SuperTux Development Team.

Instead of Mario, the hero in this game is Tux, the mascot of the Linux kernel, albeit the game's only reference to Linux. Many of the in-game graphics were created by Ingo Ruhnke, creator of Pingus.

PlayStation 3 version can be downloaded from HERE.

Installation Instructions:

Download the file in root directory. And enter following commands

$ su

--enter root password--

# cd /

# tar xvfz Supertux2.tar.gz

mopx0 has installed Windows Vista 32 bit on the PS3, the whole process takes a huge amount of time and the end result is that the emulation runs very slow as evidenced by the fact it takes nearly 25 minutes to boot to the start menu.

To quote: It's a 100% PS3 based emulation of Microsoft Windows Vista. Its super slow, but it works.

Tutorial: Install Qemu 0.9.1

- Install Vista on your Computer using Qemu and Bochs Bios Rev 1.171 by sshwarts
- Vlite helps speed the install up, Vista's install may take a day or so

- Bochs Bios Revision 1.171 can be found here (http://bochs.cvs.sourceforge.net/bochs/bochs/bios/BIOS-bochs-latest?view=log&pathrev=MAIN)
- You may also need to add this command "-cpu pentium3" for qemu to work right
- Copy the .IMG to your PS3's HDD
- Open Terminal where the Vista IMG is located
- Type qemu -hda vista.img -m 256 -L "Location to R... More »

In an article at IBM.com (linked above) titled 'PS3 is more than a Toy', Peter Seebach talks us through how to tweak Linux for the best possible performance on the PS3.

To quote: The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) runs Linux, but getting it to run well requires some tweaking. In this article, first in a series, Peter Seebach introduces the features and benefits of PS3 Linux, and explains some of the issues that might benefit from a bit of tweaking.

When Sony first announced that the PlayStation 3 would be able to run Linux natively, a great deal of excitement ensued. Early on, it was a bit of a challenge to get Linux natively installed. The supported installer ran a custom script that hand-mangled a Fedora Core 5 or 6 install DVD into a runnable system with a special PS3 kernel. People put in hours and hours of effort to get other systems, such as Ubuntu, working. Terrasoft's Yellow Dog Linux, with an actual graphical installer that ran on the PS3, was the ki... More »

From Pete today: Oh well, that’s graduation all done and I’m now back at work full time. Surprisingly though, because I’m not both studying and working, I’ve got a little more free time in the evenings!

After working so much with Quake, I felt quite fed up of looking at its code. I needed to work on something else.

So I’ve been beavering away on a PS3 Linux version of Cave Story and I’m happy to say it’s nearly done. This is a fresh port based on Pixel’s source code, instead of the earlier SDL/GP2X/x86 Linux port by Simon Parzer and I. There were a few things which I wanted to do a little differently in the code to make it more portable to systems which didn’t have SDL, such as the iPhone or WiiWare.

Those ports sadly fell through, but because Pixel gave Simon and I permission to port to Linux, I thought it would be a nice idea to port to this particular flavour of Linux that a few folks may have in their living rooms. More »

Although this requires installing the source for compatible libs, compiling, linking, etc (a binary would be a lot more end-user friendly), today SamuraiX has released an OpenBOR (Beats Of Rage) port for PS3 Linux!

To quote: Ok.... I'm finished! Here is a brand new shiny port of OpenBOR now running on PS3 Linux!!!

I used Ubuntu on my PS3, I would recommend as well that everyone uses Ubuntu for its ease of use towards downloading and installing the libraries need to get OpenBOR up and running on your PS3.

So here are the steps to get it running:

Grab the source here: svn co https://openbor.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/openbor

Required Libs prior to compilation: libSDL, libSDL_gfx, LibSDL_mixer, LibSDL_image, zlib and libpng.
Automated Building type: ./build.sh
Manual Building type:
source environ.sh 4
make BUILD_LINUX=1
