Hmm... There are some points I do not agree with, but seriously. Have you ever heard the presentation by Gabe? The AI Director not only controls when and where the zombies will arise, it also controls the music and various sound effects and the special video effects aswell. It is programmed to give us the creeps when we play! Thats why you see an endless fog far away!
You shouldnt be able to see whats ahead.. The element of surprise! Besides, you are somehow in a zombie movie.. I dont remember in a zombie movie, the survivors could see kilometers away.. Sometime they couldnt see each other even though there was enough light in the room.. Its all put like this to get the most of a "cult" zombie movie.
Now for the zombies part. All the developers have stated that their main influence, besides the Romero's films, were the films 28 days later and 28 weeks later. If you have seen that movie you would see that the zombies there are exactly the same in L4D. They move fast (unlike the classic zombies which drag themselves..) and pretty much look the same like those movies! The directors said they didnt want to make classic zombies to make it more chalenging to the players.
The single player. It was certain that the singleplayer campaign would have bots as players. They made a multiplayer co-op game and the singleplayer was of little attention. It is added just for fun, when you dont have the time to search for a game (not like it takes any long to be honest..) or simply dont want to play with intelligent beings, you load up the single player and test out your skills alone. I would like a storyline too, but I dont complain about the singleplayer how its done at all! Why would you buy the game for? To play alone or with friends?
As for your final comment, how could a multiplayer game rival a true zombie survival game like SH or RE? There just isnt any comparison at all between these two games.. except they have some infected creatures.
