Sony Unveils Next Generation Portable (NGP) Console with Specs

Category: PSP & PS Vita News  By: Pcsx2006 - (blog.us.playstation.com)

121w ago - Update: Telegraph has now confirmed that Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) console will utilize NVG cards to provide an extra layer of security, to quote:

"NGP games will come on an 'NVG card', a flash based memory system that will also be able to store downloadable content. When pressed, Hirai said the NVG card was developed to 'add an extra layer of security' in order to deter piracy, a hot topic after recent PlayStation 3 hacks."

Today Sony President and CEO Jack Tretton has unveiled the Next Generation Portable (NGP) handheld PSP2 console followed by details and NGP pictures from Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein below!

To quote: PlayStation fans across North America will be waking up to some exciting news tomorrow.

At PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Japan a few moments ago, Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, SCEI, introduced the world to the newest addition to the PlayStation product family and the future of portable gaming: currently codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable).

When PSP first launched in 2005 in North America it changed the way people thought of portable gaming and raised expectations in regards to the variety and quality of games users expected to access while on the go. It has since become the go-to handheld entertainment system for more than 64 million users who seek home entertainment quality games along with access to their music, movies, photos and more.

With NGP we carry on this rich history of redefining industry standards and raising the bar for consumer expectations for what portable gaming can deliver. Designed to blur the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, the NGP will offer Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity.

The 5-inch OLED front multi-touch display will bring brilliant images to life and the multi-touch pad on the rear will allow users to engage with the game and characters with a simple movement of their fingertips. Additionally, services created specifically for NGP will be available on PlayStation Network. These services are designed help users take their gameplay, as well as interaction with other gamers, to new levels.

While we here at PlayStation are thrilled to bring this cutting-edge technology to your fingertips, we all know that content is critical to the success for all of our platforms. I'm pleased to share that your favorite franchises will be coming to NGP, including Uncharted and Call of Duty. We are working with our extensive network of 3rd party developers and publishers as well as SCE Worldwide Studios to create experiences unlike anything else on the market.

Also announced this evening was PlayStation Suite, an entirely new initiative from PlayStation that will provide fans with the opportunity to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history.

PlayStation Suite will work with Android based, "PlayStation Certified" portable devices - including mobile phones, smart-phones, and tablet PCs - to offer "PlayStation quality" content to users worldwide. In addition to providing a selection of PS one Classics, we are also working with developers to create new and exciting content that will be available on both PlayStation Certified devices and the new NGP when it comes to market.

I think you will agree that the incredible momentum behind PlayStation continues to grow with each passing year. While 2010 was record breaking thanks to an unsurpassed line-up of award winning AAA software, the introduction of 3D entertainment into millions of homes and the launch of our incredibly successful PlayStation Move motion controller, 2011 is already shaping up to be one of our biggest years yet.

Below are the complete NGP details from PS Blog, as follows:

Today in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced the next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP). NGP will make its debut at the end of the 2011, but here's everything you need to know right now.

Would be nice to be able to sync up your ps3 controller, and have a TVout HD cable, with the ability to output games to HDTV. Although it wouldnt work for any titles that use the two touch areas.

I'd imagine the system will have plenty of onboard storage because it'll primarily be driven by downloads and i doubt they'll sell writeable nvg cards as thats a security problem waiting to happen.

Actually no apparently the cards will be used to store "downloadable content". great so I've got to buy the download then the medium to store it? This thing better get hacked in the early days or it'll tank faster than PSP.

I want to know more about these NVG cards.. how much data they can hold, what they look like, and also want to know if the NGP is going to have ANY on board storage. Would be nice to be kinda like the PSPGo with on board storage, then the option to add you own.

But again, that would just drive the prices of this thing already seems its gonna be close to $400 as it is, but with the due date being so late in the year, who knows what will come out between now and then hardware prices could drop causing the price of the machine to actually be right where the 3DS is expected to be (and if so, i would imagine Nintendo would have to drop price of the 3DS!)

That's a hell of a lot more power than any phone on the market. I'm pretty sure this thing knows EXACTLY what it wants to be: a high-performance gaming device. The only vaguely phone-ish feature I see is 3g connectivity which would likely require some sort of carrier data contract, and its since been revealed that there will be a wifi-only version available too.

Now the one feature that I have yet to see mentioned that would really help sell this device for me is HDMI-Out. I rarely have the need for a high-end gaming device on the go (though its nice to have on those rare occasions that I am traveling long distance), but if I could plug this thing into my home entertainment center and pair a couple Sixaxis/Dual Shock3 controllers to it via Bluetooth. I could treat it just like one of my other home consoles, and it would get a lot more use.
