Today PlayStation Network Operations Director Eric Lempel shared a video preview of the upcoming PS3 Firmware v3.10 update.

To quote: Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience.

By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity.

This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

• The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
• The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

To get a preview of what’s coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.10 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

Stay tuned for more PS3 Hacks news. Also be sure to drop by the PS3 Hacks Forum for updates!

Works fine here, and it uses the same code as all the others we post from the PS Blog so perhaps it's just a temporary issue with the Viddler service for you.

I will +Rep your reply posted in this thread now, but when we do backend work (as we did today) the submissions do not work properly.

This is the drawback of not having a test site I suppose, but we do the best we can.

I thought facebook integration would mean having an icon that makes one directly log into facebook. I am sure it is not everyone who is interested in sharing game information and from what has been demoed, you link to facebook by turning on three features in your account info, which I won't do.

Secondly if the browse could just be fast enough to be a credible alternative to the PC's then that would be merit making this update interesting. From what I have seen in the video it is more of a 3.01 than 3.1.

+ Very nice about the friends list change.
- There should still be an option to turn that "highlight" off all together.

+ Organization of pics looks good. Wonder how it's going to look on sd tv's though?

+ Facebook integration... don't use it, don't care, but maybe good for people that are into that kinda of stuff.

- Still no option to change the font size...

- Still no way to get rid of the ticker in the upper right (without changing the date)...

/lays down 2 cents

I knew we wouldnt get cross chat from the interview posted earlier this week, it feels more like 2+ months before we see that feature coming to the ps3. And yeah to me the update looks pretty lame since I dont use facebook and I dont think its gaming related, but oh well.

Boring... Another useless update.

Honestly people, there's more to life than facebook.

Sony - why don't you do something useful? Do some crazy cool stuff that puts the other consoles to shame. Instead, you're farting around with facebook support?? WTF? That's going to lock you into supporting facebook through its evolution for years to come.

This is the best you can come up with? People have been asking for cross-game chat - as much as I don't care for that feature either, at least it's something the majority of PS3 owners have been asking for. In my circle of friends, not one gives a rats behind about facebook integration.

sony really needs to fix their game launching on the PS3. For example, on uncharted I need to quit the video chat with my friends, launch the game, then find the game they are in. If they send me an "invite" it just lets me know they're playing, and doesn't give me the option to join it. That's what the 360 does so well, and that's whats making me consider getting one.

I agree with the highlight turnoff feature. i do enjoy the boxes, i did before, but I'm just tired of people complaining about them.

As a SD TV owner, I'm pretty sure it should look the same. Sony usually has testers to test the new firmware, so one of those testers should test everything out on a SD tv.

you're right, I'm a facebook user, i find this feature pretty awesome, but everyone has their own opinions. some hate it, some like it, but it's there and it's going to stay. They aren't forcing people to use it.

If watching the video, you can hear the man say "you can read about further improvements after the update is released". so, necessarily they may have added the ability to change text sizes. i personally never noticed the text size from before and after, other than it was very hard to read if sitting about 20 feet away from your HD tv before the 3.0 update.

as said above, further improvements will be revealed once the update is available. Also, if you view the screenshots released days ago about the update, you can see that one of the screenshots has no news ticker. so, there's a possibility that this will happen.

Don't blame the company, blame the game. not every game has that problem, it's just the way the developer chooses to create things. many games do this well, LBP, RE5, etc.. people need to understand that this isn't Sony's doing and it's the developer of the game. no one is forcing you to continue playing a PS3, do as you wish. buy a 360 if you wish. it's not going to make a difference if you do or don't. each console has it's strong points, but PSN is free, you should realize that. the features aren't going to be perfect, but it's a darn good service that many people enjoy. if you ask me, I buy games for $60 USD, i don't want to spend hundreds each year to play games that ultimately should be free to play in the first place.

i just wish they had a universal game launching setup, like home was supposed to be. I still love my ps3, and won't stop playing it. I just wish they would implement the features that we are all requesting.

Well, the Facebook integration is a Nice-To-Have feature but it's not THA feature.

Sony should be making more interesting stuff... Everyone will forget about the facebook integration on day 2...

I was also one of the people that submitted this piece of news, less than a hour after it was posted on the blog, and I didn't get credit.

Facebook integration... I wonder how it will work on the front and back ends.
I'd rather have cross-game chat though.

I am +Rep'ing your post reply in this thread too.

We do have more backend work to do soon (hopefully tonight we'll do some) so to those who occasionally submit news just keep this in mind. Hopefully by this weekend everything will be completed though.

Yet another PS3 update that I could care less about. I don't want to spam my Facebook profile with worthless posts, hopefully my friends will avoid turning on these options as well.

I also expected the Facebook integration would have been some kind of quick-access Facebook app inside of the XMB, unfortunately the reality is quite lame.

The pictures update doesn't help either. I don't store my pics on the PS3...how about some kind of connection to Flickr, Facebook or another service? Or even Cooliris?

Guess we'll have to hope for a real update sometime in 2010. The #1 update I want to see is MKV container support, much like the WD TV HD player.

Wow amazing update, just what i needed... a PS3 to facebook connection - Meh pointless waste of space.

This update looks to be just another minor update with meaningless UI changes that only a very select group of users will actually be glad to receive.

I can almost guarentee it includes more security related 'fixes' than worthwhile functionality (yeah i said security fixes, there are bound to be some holes that haven't been discovered by anyone except sony devs). Don't believe me? we'll just see when it gets released as a REQUIRED update.

Wake me up when a REAL release comes along (you know, one that does SOMETHING or includes a major exploit! haha)

PSPSwampy.
(Didn't think I had anything to moan about today, but good old sony came good again!)

It's not that bad to have Facebook integrated. It's no use for me because i'm playing at my PC tft but maybe someone will have eventually something out of it.

I'm still missing some gaming-oriented updates...

The rest is not very interesting to me...

Anyone know how to get the new Facebook trophies to show on your FB page? I've added my facebook account on my PS3 but can't find any trophies etc on facebook. Do I need to add an app in fb?
