A new report on the growth trends of video consumer devices, including gaming consoles, recently found that Sony's PS3 is increasing its global market share.

To quote: "The PS3 is dominant in Japan and Korea, and as of June 2008, has begun to outsell the Xbox 360 in Europe.

It is also steadily increasing its market share in all other regions across the globe, including in the North American market," the report said, while noting that the Xbox 360 still sells more than the PS3 in North America, and consequently, 360 sales still beat PS3 in total worldwide sales.

Even so, PS3 sales have been surging (44% over the holidays) and SCEA senior vice president of Marketing and PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, recently insisted that PS3 will eventually overtake Xbox 360.

Research and Markets also noted that the Americas market should remain the largest for all the console makers through 2013.

That said, "The high population density and rapid uptake of technology in countries such as Japan and Korea, and to a lesser extent in Singapore and Hong Kong, see a disproportionately high level of console sales compared to the rest of the world.

Console sales are also fairly high in Western Europe and are growing considerably in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America, and other areas in Asia."

lower the price to $199 US or 179 EUR or 149 in UK and they will gain huge market share... like, duh? PS3 is a good box, decent media server and good blu-ray player. For $600 no one cared... when it's $99 in 3 years everyone will have one and they will crack 100 million unit sales world wide.

You really need an accounting or marketing degree to figure this one out?

And lose $100 per console? I think Sony is rather happy with where their currently sitting. If they find a way to cut costs again (its only a matter of time) then we might see a slight price drop again. Will it be any time soon? No. All they need to do right now is keep up the software.

Guys C'mon. where are not talking about a NES aganist a NEO GEO. XBOX 360 Can't handle Uncharted 2 ?

did You know that video card of XBOX 360 (ATI) is more powerful of the PS3 video card (NVIDIA) ? it is not a mystery anymore from years this news.

Indeed the xbox GPU is better, yes, but in case of uncharted 2 the GPU is only responsible for the physics and everything else is made by the 6 SPUs.

Saying the xbox360 is better because of the gpu is like comparing seats in a car.

xbox = honda accord
ps3 = corvette

Yes, the xbox has more 'seating' than the ps3, but the ps3 will go a hell of lot faster than that honda

And I know which one I'd rather be seen in...

did I say tath the CPU of XBOX 360 is better... ? of course is better the PS3 CPU... but this don't mean that the CPU of XBOX 360 is slepping inside and don't do nothing.

so I reply again... we are not talking about the differences about a NINTENDO NES aganist a NEO GEO.

there is no doubt that in term of hardware technology ps3 is the best console right now but when it comes to software and games developments i can safely say that it was limited by developers.. i mean if all developers can do what naughty dog and kojima did then the ps3 is going to dominate for good.

It's taken a while for developers to figure out how to get the best out of the PS3 hardware, but they're coming along now. Same thing happened in the PS2 era; compare the last PS2 games to the first ones, they're practically a separate generation, though the hardware didn't change at all.

The PS3 has a lot of potential under the hood; I think we'll see even better things coming in the future.

The 360, while a powerful bit of hardware, is programmed in a much more typical fashion. I think developers pretty well understand how to get performance out of it; minor improvements is all that can really be expected. It's a good machine, but I don't know that it's a great machine.

The PS3 Hardware is quite impressive, I only wish they had put more into the GPU. If a game is forced to use the GPU only for physics and an SPE for graphics, that should tell you something. I guess the decision made sense at the time (get it out of the door, we already have a huge loss per system). Put imagine what it would have been like with tad better GPU.

Maybe the GPU was supposed to be easier to program for, after the super complex CPU they decided to give developers a nice, safe, 8800gt.

actually the PS3 has a series 7 GPU and 8800gt is a series 8 graphic card (lol, what a surprise)^^

i think sony just wanted to give the PS3 a GPU that supports 1080p HDTV and thats all.

Damn, you're a tough crowd if your jaw did not drop for Uncharted 2 , i did not think that quality of graphics was possible on a games console until i saw that game.
