Sony: PS3 Firmware 3.0 Features Just Wild Speculation

didnt sony say that about the ps3 slim rumours, which are quickly coming to fruition??

or that a new psp model wasn't coming out (ok, they said psp-4000 wasn't coming out, but psp-go... that's just semantics!)

so there's still life in the rumour mill yet =)

with that said though, the rumoured features in fw3 are very appealing and a wish list come true for alot of people, but why would this fw revision's features be leaked when we're still on fw2.76/2.8?

surely sony would be excitedly working on 2.9, gearing up changes for a fw3 if it was to deliver on its rumours - like in the past when they have announced that a fw will b making changes to allow for new upcoming features

Yup! Just like that said the only change in 2.8 was the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved. :p

So no, I don't put too much trust in them... as sure as I'm typing this reply, I feel both a PS3 Slim and a PS Phone will arrive despite Sony's constant denial of them.

haha yeh i cant believe after sony told sony ericson that they cant use the playstation brand for their phones or utilise games, that they are bringing out a sony ericson which has supposedly got remote play features with ps3 allowing psp and ps1 games to be played!

i feel like sony has gone back to the inconsistent ways it once had at the beggining of the ps3's life!

"digital downloads are not the way forward like MS say it is" --> psn store (not necessarily a bad point, but inconsistent non-the-less)

the only consistency that sony has kept through out is the ever allusive price cut *sigh*

lets hope that sony will learn to just come out with the truth or go back to the "no comment" on speculation ways.

Wonder if these people ever get tired of lying. Its gettin ridiculous now the way they deny everything and even outright say something is not going to happen then a month later BAM! it happens

True, they said Home was just a possible application and it may not even come out. But look at it now, it has become one of the main things people use to keep in touch with friends and fellow gamers.

Im not criticising anyone, and pretty awsome thread by the way, but do you guys remember a little thing called ps3 firmware 2.80? the web went crazy about it, their were so many rumors going around about all the new things it was going to have.

Ingame chat was one of the biggest, and when it came time to download update 2.80... nothing just some speed boost, and some playback improvements!! I have no doubt in my mind that sony will bring something that will seperate the ps3 from any other console, but believing in rumors just gets you pumped up for nothing, ive been disappointed way too much times before, so im just going to sit and wait for the official ps3 update 3.0, thats my opinion!!

I really wouldn't get excited about this. It may have some nice features, but I very much doubt that you can compare it to the NXE... I would doubt Sony would drastically change their UI since it's also on the PSP (and also their TV's?). They want to keep a unified interface it seems like.

But hey, I'm all for surprises!

Just to clarify, i dont necessarily believe what the rumours say. I am just pointing out that they would deny anything , true or false. Basically dont ever listen to what the cooperate types say, lol.

Well well well, the rumor mill has turned again. These firmware rumors are second only to price drop rumors in annoyance, IMO. It's all fine and dandy to speculate on what Sony's going to do, but seriously I think we all need to calm down on these topics and just let everything happen when it happens. We get excited about things we WANT to see happen, so people come up with rumors that feed off of that, and articles get posted, then people get disappointed when it doesn't happen like the rumor said. Here's what I have to say about this:

1. Sony will ALWAYS deny rumors. This is pretty much a policy every company holds, because they don't want anything "secret" getting out. Conversely, just because they deny something doesn't mean it's real or unreal because they will deny both. Therefore, don't pay too much attention to Sony denying anything.

2. I doubt Sony's going to overhaul their OS/GUI. It would be cool if they did, but I just don't see it happening. This is not based on any evidence, it just seems that Sony releases their updates in little bits without any big revelations.

3. All that being said, Sony does need to add some features that users (and I) have been clamoring for, namely:
[INDENT]a. In-game chat[/INDENT]
[INDENT]b. Background patch downloading[/INDENT]
[INDENT]c. More visualizations[/INDENT]
[INDENT]d. Support for standard playlist formats (.m3u) and no cap on locally made playlists[/INDENT]
[INDENT]e. A more robust PSN experience, including this "reputation" system, to make their internet experience more appealing in comparison to X-Box Live[/INDENT]

And finally, the big one.......
[INDENT]f. FREAKING PS2 SUPPORT.... seriously there is no reason this can't be added since the most recent iteration is software emulation. I'm so pissed I waited until I could afford a PS3 with the understanding I could play PS2 games (I never owned a PS2) and it was REMOVED. I know I could buy a used PS2, but it's the principle that matters. They shouldn't have removed the feature to begin with. If nothing else they need to make it a paid download add-on if money is the issue. I know I would pay for it.[/INDENT]

Official Sony word cant be trusted, look at the previous rumours they've denied but ended up being true. I'd be really surprised if 3.00 wasnt a big overhaul and if the PS3 slim etc etc wasnt "real". :)

i would like to see ps2 software emulation for the ps3s that don't have the have the ps2 hardware..

but i do speculate that some of the stuff announced by IGN will be completely fake.

we all want the ps3 to be able to play more ps2 games, but sony are never going to do it while people can still buy the ps2 in the shops. :tdown:

I think you're missing my point. Sony is going to deny anything that's a rumor, just because 1. If it's true, they don't want their secrets getting out so they will just claim everything is a "rumor" (which will be true) and deny deny deny, and 2. If a rumor is NOT true, well they're going to deny it just the same.

So if Sony denies something, don't think twice one way or the other. If they confirm it, on the other hand, they gotta stick by their guns as a company. Unless someone knows of past precedent where Sony has claimed something that wasn't true?

I really hope they will support Software PS2 emulation.

I have a BC PS3 and I would rather not wear out the laser of a $500 machine. You can get a PS2 for like 50 bucks and you can get it modded to play burned games. I really do not understand all the the BC crying.

Here's my 2 cents on what I would like to see improved with the PS3.

I'll put these into two categories: the possible, and the improbable.

The Possible:

Allow automatic syncing of PSX game saves with the PSP and PS3. I would like to be able to play Metal Gear Solid on the PS3, save my game, then pick up where I left from the version I have downloaded on my PSP, while I'm out and about.

Unified theme for the PS3 and PSP, I would like to see a PS3 version of the PSP's "original" theme (Note, not classic)

More visualizations for audio

Support for Instant Messaging clients like AIM, etc.

Email support, perhaps allowing users to create *@playstation.com addresses or *@psn.com

Remote Play on Any Device (This would include PC's, PSP's, SmartPhones, etc) This wouldn't even have to be full fledged Remote Play. Basically, I would like to be able to queue up downloads while I'm in class or at work, so that by the time I get back, they're ready.

The option to automatically install content that you have downloaded (After stepping out for 45 minutes for a demo of a game to download, I don't want to come back only to find out that I could have been playing the game sooner if I had came back and manually installed it)

Some form of Voip. The PSP has it.

Adhoc PS3 networks that allow playing multiplayer PS3 games from 1 disk.

More supported video formats.

Uniform music behavior!! I want to continue to listen to my music when I start up, play, or quit a game!


The Improbable

Allow more customizable partition schemes. I don't want to be limited to using 10g for either the PS3 or for Other OS

Allow direct access to the GPU while in otheros. I would really like to see the full potential of the PS3 express itself in every way possible.

Software emulation of the PS2 for later PS3 consoles! I believe this is possible even without the emotion engine. The PS3 is powerful enough to handle PS2 emulation.

Ability to download full PS3 games on demand

More useful XMB while in games. What's the point of even having the XMB in a game when I can't use it for much else but quitting the game??

Anyways, there you have it.

Emulation is tough. Or, more precisely, fast, precise emulation is tough.

The PS2 was a funky architecture, and was programmed in a rather different way than PCs or even the Cell work. Games would carefully time how long various operations took, and try to keep everything flowing as fast as possible, sometimes down to the clock cycle. Emulating hardware to that level of precision is really hard. The PS3 is plenty powerful, but emulating other hardware takes serious juice. (Look at QEMU - it imitates a full x86 processor, and even running on an x86, the speed hit is dramatic.)

Getting 80% of the way there is pretty simple. It's the last 20%, the unusual conditions and corner cases, that take the most effort. And guaranteed, for every possible weird use case, there's some game out there that exercises it. Right now, people are still willing to buy PS2s, which are so cheap to make that they're almost pure profit for Sony. Until that changes, Sony has no need to put forth that development effort.

So far as I can see, what'll happen is Sony will write an emulator that handles 80% of the job, and then - for the PS2 games it owns - port those games to avoid the 20% corner cases. They'll be PSN downloads, eventually.

Well at least Sony is trying :)

I'd rather have an emulator that works with half the games (Like how the Xbox 360 Xbox 1 Titles are limited), rather than have no emulator at all.
