Today PS3 Brand Manager Mark Bowles has made available a PS3 Firmware 3.0 Q&A on the European PlayStation Blog, as follows:

Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now.

Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.

I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?

To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.

Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?

One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.

The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?

There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:

(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident

(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.

For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.

I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?

Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.

The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?

The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan).

We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!

I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?

The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.

The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?

It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB.

In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.

Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?

We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.

As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!

ok so where is the North America FREE THEME? we are getting the shaft here. im not paying for anything i cant at least preview anyways. which the LBP theme you cannot.

another classic example of Sony opening their mouths about features that they cant back up until a few weeks after release date.

Seriously I think some folks are just irritable. That thing is actually useful and I dont mind that they have it there. The friends list background also i can see the use of even though it was a bit strange at the start. Just try to get used to things, and i hope they dont remove certain new features just because some folks are vocal about their nitpicks. At least make it an option to have it or not to.

im sure there is a nicer way that fits the rest of the PS3 theme to categorize online and offline friends... it just looks like balls man u got to admit it sticks out like a soar thumb compared to the rest of the xmb.

LOL .. so true indeed ....

I just read a lot of blah, blah, blah, sorry, sorry. But don't they know that actions worth a lot more than words? ;) hehe

I don't know what to believe right now, for instance, our "mexican" PlayStation Store is so obliterated (it's really old compared to yours). Yet, they keep promising that they will work on that .... next year though

By the way, I really miss the game start chime, don't know why it's gone, it has been there in all PS's :shame:

you can preview all the themes.... it was just added a bit later -,_-,... also i dont see why you all care about Pal getting a free theme, or even a special one, Japan only have 3 *I believe* 1 of which is free, and US has 4... so if Pal gets something special for free, just go to the store and take it xD... also dynamic themes outside of LBP, havent really wowed me, or a lot of people... so stop looking at the fact they got something different, and just take it if you want it =P

i don't get what you're trying to complain about here, the issue is that they wern't ready across the board, and they are not offering the same content to every one, especially when its free, that's lame. When you look at there excuse of how its hard to release them in sync because of pricing and difference in currencies... that has no bearing over the release of the free content to all PSN users regardless of geographical location. so whats there excuse then?

As for going and getting it if you want it. yah its possible but it requires creating different accounts as a work around. the issue is this shouldnt be required.. not that it cant be done.

Whatever. That's not important at all. The only important question was the one about Uncharted. But he missed the most important one. When will people with controller issues be able to use their PS3 again?

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3updates&thread.id=97467&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

No one has an official response. It's all based on what users suppose it's happening. And there are hundreds of users with the same problem.
If it was on purpose just say "hey, sorry, you have been a victim of a scam. And now we are not letting you play with your PS3", or just say "we are working on it". BUT SAY SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

I'm not able to test if Uncharted is working or not. Since my controller is not working and I can't use my PS3.

Maybe I'm just tired of being ignored. All I want is an official answer to a simple question: "Why some controllers stopped working after the update". It's not that hard

#12
By JeffJ on 11 weeks ago:
I agree, thats something they should have addressed for sure, as my BD remote no longer works either after the update. and i bought it from an official licensed Sony reseller. so its kinda pissed me off as well. i haven't touched my PS3 since the day i updated and the BD remote pooched on reboot.

You are being too harsh on them; Europe is a difficult market to supply for the reasons they give and the only free theme is the theme in Japan. I dont really see where they talked about features they werent ready for or at least I dont see where its a big deal (it aint free i dont care :p)

i mean that every theme that they planned for (remember sony correspondent was already talking about how more were to come, just issues with releasing due to geographical location and currency issues) should have hit the store the day off the update. its not to much to ask for that every thing works and be ready when its released.

Especially the fact that some of there own SKU controllers stopped working after the update seems to point out the sloppyness of this situation. They also, didnt have the ability to preview the themes ready when released, but that didn't stop them from shoving them out asap and asking $2.99 for them. so you seriously have to think about it, its just messy.

also, the game freeze issue for many, it was just a bad situation all over.

I realize there does appear to be a known issue with the controllers, but have you (in general, not aimed at one individual) considered trying to reset the pairing on your devices before complaining?

A firmware update could easily screw your bluetooth pairing registrations out of wack.

BD-Remote users:-
Try re-pairing via the System-Accessories menu.

Sixaxis/Dual Shock etc users:-
Try connecting the controller via USB while the PS3 is TOTALLY off (ie mains power switch is off), then turn on the power and hit the PS button.
Failing the PS button working, turn on the PS3 then try it.

Obviously this won't work for some (maybe a lot?) but there are BOUND to be some people with perfectly ok kit complaining because the update simply screwed their pairing up.

If this helps - great, hopefully you'll think twice about complaining in future.
If this doesn't help - carry on complaining!!!

LOL i thought YOU might have ;) still thought it worth posting though - you just know there are idiots out there that just need to do this!

I WAS one of those idiots back at an earlier fimware update - my BD remote wouldn't let me go LEFT for love nor money.

I was so mad and nearly took it back, then i thought what the hell i'll try re-pairing just in case. What do you know it works perfectly! (grr i'd rather it had lost the pairing completely though as it would have made a whole lot more sense!)

ah i wish that was my case, but it wont even detect it when trying to repair its just dead as hell.

Change the year setting from 2009 to 2010, restart your PS3 and the ticker will be gone.

These firmwares that are intended to be great upgrades and additions typically end up being more disastrous than anything else. I dunno, I kinda miss the PS2 days of not having to download new "updates" every couple weeks with lame new introductions that render people's consoles useless if even for a day, it's a day too long.

The days of buying a game, putting it in, and playing. Not having to wait 20 minutes for a mandatory update, or finding out that Sony's greatest new firmware has caused more damage to my PS3 than good. PS3 is almost more trouble than it's worth these days.

The first generation of consoles that require firmware updates, just happen to be the most troublesome as well. Lay off the firmware updates until you have something "truly" exceptional to update Sony, and stop pissing people off by breaking their expensive consoles with your "great and innovative" updates that offer next to nothing innovative at all. I loved my PS1 and my PS2 even more, but the PS3 has ben a downright annoyance next to my easy to manage 360.

Get with the program Sony, keep it simple, and make sure it works on "all" of the 50 SKU's you've decided to release before forcing us to take your updates.

I tried this before and it didn't work. I tried it again, just in case. But no, it's definitely not working :(

How is a Clock & a ticker telling me to Check Out the Video Store over & over useful? I have dozens of clocks on my TV etc. I hate this huge rectangular box thing & it is HUGE on my 73 inch screen & it is useless with stupid little ugly icons, big empty space in between to widen the rectangle space for more ticked ad room & a clock face with hands? Overkill.

Whovever requested a clock in the 1st place I Hate you idiots for ruining the clean XMB look Screen Burn In waiting to happen & it's the only thing you can't turn off. So I say let's start a Kill the PS3 Clock Clan! until they give us the option to disable it.

The ticker clock is to me by far the worst part of update 3.0 so just because it doesn't bother you good for you you got no complaint so shut up because it definitely bothers other people.

"Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock."

yah most will find that 90% of the status indicator is useful, so cool your jets no one has to shut up if they have a complaint about the firmware they are entitled to there opinion on the matter. The ticker is lame, but the status indicator is useful. some times the good comes with the bad and its probably going to allow you to disable the ticker after a time period. didn't another user already state that it disappears if you change your date as well?

If you don't find the status indicator useful thats fine but no one is going to shut up if they don't share your hate for it.

What really drives me up a wall with the new firmware ... the fading text! If I'm browsing through my videos or music and I pause for even 2 seconds ... all the other file names with the exception of the one I'm on fade away. So you have to keep moving up and down the list or you can't see the previous or next choices.

Why oh why did they do that??!! If anyone know how to disable this fading ... I would really appreciate the info.

Totally agree with you there - thousands of music tracks, i used to scroll through a way, stop and review all tracks listd on screen - no more thanks to this 'eye candy' ! (If you're gonna do something like this, at least let us turn it on/off!!!)

The least they could have done woud have been to fade it only part way, but leave 'non selected' items shown (i.e. 'Grey them out') - EXACTLY like they've done with all items under the system menu (You CAN at least still see the other options there!)

Sheesh, when will they learn eh! ;)
