Sony Offers PlayStation Protection Plan for Added Peace of Mind

Tags: sony offers playstation protection plan added peace of mind

160w ago - Today Sony's Hardware Marketing Director John Koller has announced news of a new PlayStation Protection Plan for those seeking added peace of mind with their PS3 and PSP product purchases.

To quote: Many of you can attest to the fact that the PlayStation brand has long been synonymous with the highest quality in engineering and design.

For those of you looking for a little extra peace of mind, we're now offering an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PSP (PlayStation Portable) systems that is backed by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise. Under the new program, PS3 and PSP owners in the United States can purchase an extended service plan of one or two years that begins after the original one-year manufacturer's limited warranty expires.

With the PlayStation Protection Plan, you can extend the same coverage from the original manufacturer's one-year warranty for one or two additional years. The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians at SCEA-authorized repair facilities.

The PlayStation Protection Plan is available beginning in May 2010. PSP owners can also choose the Accidental Damage Plan, which provides coverage for cracked-screen damage in the event of an unexpected drop. See pricing below:

• PS3 - 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
• PSP - 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
• PSP Accidental Damage - 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)

So, why are we offering this now, you ask? Well, we've heard your requests for an extended service plan that's backed directly by SCEA.

From the get go, we've been extremely committed to offering the best entertainment experiences possible. While both the PS3 and PSP systems are designed with future-proof technology and built for long lifecycles, we're excited to be offering this service to those of you looking for a little something extra.

PS3 and PSP owners take note - the PlayStation Protection Plan is available to PS3 or PSP owners (both the PSP-3000 and PSPgo systems) who are still within their one-year limited manufacturer's warranty.

The PSP Accidental Damage Plan must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning a PSP system, and the plan is effective beginning on the purchase date. You can purchase the PlayStation Protection Plan by calling 1-866-716-7669. Additional details and are available at http://us.playstation.com/support/protection-plan/index.htm. Web site will be accessible later today.

To be honest, the YLOD fix is so simple that even for $59.99 Sony is laughing all the way to the bank.

My friend's PS3 fat YLOD'd and it took us less than 30 minutes to pull it apart and repair it using a heat gun. And that's with neither of us having even done it before and just going by directions in a YouTube video.

If I had to do it again, I bet I could do it in under 15 minutes.

In south Africa, we have an outlet called Hifi Corporation (selling all kinds of electronic products). With any purchase, you can buy additional cover for any product based on their own terms and conditions. This is a third-party guarantee/warranty to boost sales and give consumers more peace of mind. I might be mistaken, but I think they would have the same kind of deal with the PS3 and other consoles.

My opinion of extended warranties or guarantees is that I have no confidence in the quality of the product when I take it out. Surely $ony can't be that insecure about their product. There must be another hidden agenda behind this "deal". One would shudder to think this is a ploy by them to break PS3's with firmware just to fix and install latest firmware (note there is no option to units older than 1 year) - I would rather wish not to subscribe to any such idea but it is open to comment.

It could well be just another way to make some money out of the console selling business - "Gee fellow directors, how can we milk another $59 from our receding number of consumers after FW 3.21 ... hmmm ... INSURANCE!!! YAY!!!"

C'mon $ony, what is the real deal?

Yep, from one of the replies in the blog, it seems that is the case. Meaning almost all the fat ones, unless you happen to still find one in store, are not covered by this "plan". And although I like the idea that repair is done by Sony officially, but for some stores/companies, the extended warranties are cheaper, besides, I do not trust/like Sony too much at the moment.
Quote The Service Plan Provider is Federal Warranty Service Corporation, P.O. Box 105689, Atlanta, GA 30348-5689, 1-877-881-8578 in all states except in California where the Service Plan Provider is Sureway, Inc. P.O. Box 105689, Atlanta, GA 30348-5689, 1-877-881-8578; in Florida where the Service Plan Provider is United Service Protection, Inc., 11222 Quail Roost Drive, Miami, FL 33157, 1-877-881-8578; and in Massachusetts where the Service Plan Provider is PlayStation Services LLC, 919 East Hillsdale Blvd., Foster City, CA 94404-2175.

If store/company offers extended warranties provided by those companies, then it should probably be the same as Sony's extended warranties.

Some other high lights, was bored and reading their Terms & Conditions
