Sony Files Patent for Adapter to Make PS3 Backwards Compatible

224w ago - According to Siliconera.com (linked above), Sony Japan has officially filed a [Register or Login to view links] for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles.

To quote on the PS2 to PS3 adapter patent: "Japanese [Register or Login to view links] are buzzing about a patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan for a new generation to previous generation console adapter.

We checked the Japanese Patent database to verify and a patent indeed exists.

A schematic of the proposed adapter (200) shows the device has its own processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, sound processor, and graphic processor."

I felt the same way when faced with leaving my CECHA01 on 3.15, and Sony deserves nothing. Bought an under-warranty slim 120GB for 175 because the BD drive wouldn't take the disc. so not only did I not help Sony profits, they paid to fix my machine!

Couldn't someone who knows what they're doing peek/poke, whatever, on an 80gb console to find where bc is enabled/disabled. Like remote play. Likely could be enabled on all non hardware bc consoles, Sony waiting for the ps2 sales to drop off before enabling it.

I remember when we had something similar to this... I think they called it a ps3... come to think about it, I bought one...hmm, why the hell would I buy something to make my ps3 enabled to do something it already does... oh yeah, they took that "feature" away because people dont like ps2 games... seriously though, 60g-full 20g-full 80g-emulated-wtf?! NEXT innovation please...

Maybe this patent is for PSP2 emulating PSP.. maybe even PS2 emulator for PSP2.
