I'd have to agree with most of what your saying, seeing that it all comes together in a logical sense, but I don't quite think Sony has given up on the PS3 yet or that they plan to (at least I hope not.)
I think if Sony was planning on abandoning the PS3 they wouldn't have gone through so much effort to built a community such as Playstation Home or working on a number of great exclusive titles for the near future while slowly expanding the PS3's capability through various firmware updates.

Sony is officially evil.... They risked their best selling product of all time to launch their stupid format.... But that's okay, HVD beats blu-ray 20 to 1, now. If they drop the PS3 any time soon, I won't be buying another PlayStation. We will just say that.

This article is silly and PS3 is succeeding just as much as the 360 as their sales figures for year to date are identical!
Two words: PURE SPECULATION!
Sony couldn't know they would win the format-war.
So there is always a plan B.
I just don't belive in opinions. Sorry.

Guys if sony fails someone else will join the console wars, its called competition and believe me apple will seriously look at the consoles if one of the players retire.
Losing ground on the consoles is a big mistake and thats why I believe sony will never lose its playstation or comunity, because with a console that has a comunity and applications like the psn store and home they can sell 24/7 to anyone on the planet with internet connection. Do you seriously think any company in their right mind will lose that advantage? NO never, why do you think MS is working so hard on the xbox360 because comunitys are powering web 2.0 and web 3.0 and costumers are spending big money on the web.
Competition is great and if sony does retire from the console business its their loss not ours, we will just go out and buy an xbox or whatever and get all the games on a single console so dont worry to much and they will never lose their base believe me.

Can you show me some proof of this? HVD isn't even out yet, and I doubt it will not be made public. HVD is just a holographic disc reader with 2 lasers, a green and a red one if I'm not mistaken. At the moment it is losing to blu-ray. But not by much, and HVD will eventually pass it, since blu-ray can only go so far. Please post the link of the article you read containing the reason it will not be made public. I don't doubt your telling the truth, but I would like to see it so I can at least confirm it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc
There are no movie studios planning to release any films ever on the format.
There are no retail players being designed. HVD is only being produced as a means to backup huge amounts of data.
The industry has picked BluRay and for high definition movies there is really no advantage whatsoever to having even more space, especially with multi-layer bluray tech going as high as 16 layers in current R&D. It'd be a very, very hard sell.

There are no current plans to sell movies on HVD. At all. It is only being marketed as an enterprise backup solution for large businesses.

Also no one planned on marketing on blu-ray before they made a player. Well maybe Sony, but that's it.

anyway back to the article, i feel that most of this is true, but i doubt sony will be dropping the PS3, as they have always talked about its 10 year plan etc...

This doesn't make sense, if HVD hasn't come out yet, how is it only just losing to blu-ray? i dont know much about whats going on with HVD but reading what other people are saying, the HVD cant pass blu-ray as a format if nobody is planning on using it for movies, which in sense is what blu-ray is for. from a business aspect blu-ray wouldnt consider HVD as competition, and vice versa. yes they are discs, but they are discs doing different things
