Sony Details PS3 and PSP Hardware Sales Data and Expectations

105w ago - Sony revealed today that the PS3 has reached the expected sales of 13 million units for the 2009 fiscal year as part of their latest fiscal report.

As previously reported, with new and more efficient PS3 consoles shipping Sony has moved one step closer to hardware profitability.

The total of PlayStation 3 units sold so far (as of March, 2010) worldwide is now at 35.7 million since the system launched in late 2006.

Furthermore, Sony is forecasting another 15 million units sold by the end of the next fiscal year. In other words, they are expecting the PlayStation 3 to reach 50.7 million units in lifetime sales by March 31, 2010.

2006 Fiscal Year (April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007) - 3.5 million
2007 Fiscal Year (April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008) - 9.1 million
2008 Fiscal Year (April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009) - 10.1 million
2009 Fiscal Year (April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010) - 13 million

In addition to the PlayStation 3, Sony also revealed sales for the PSP and PlayStation. Despite the launch of the PSP Go, the PSP fell a little bit short of the projected 10 million units forecasted for the 2009 fiscal year.

Instead, Sony's handheld system sold 9.9 million units. On the other hand, the Playstation 2 exceeded Sony's 7.0 million units sold projection be selling 300,000 more during the last fiscal year.

In total, the PSP has sold 63.2 million units while the record-breaking Playstation 2 is at 146.8 million units sold as of the March 31, 2010.

For the 2010 fiscal year that will end on March 31, Sony is forecasting massive drops for both systems. The PSP is only expected to sell 8 million units while the Playstation 2 is projected to sell just 6 million."
