This is being filed as a rumor for the moment, if anyone can read Chinese and do a translation of what exactly these pictures are supposed to be of feel free to comment below.

Could they be of a cost-cutting new PS3 Slim redesign (with a new PS3 font to boot) leaked by Chinese BBS LevelUp, or just pics of a knockoff PS3 clone?

We do know Sony just recently stated there were no plans for a PS3 Slim console version anytime soon.

More details to come as they are available... and more pics are available HERE or linked above!

I agree.. however, even larger sites like Kotaku are not sure at the moment themselves. :hmm:

Today, pictures of what appears to be a redesigned PS3 have appeared on Chinese message boards. The picture seem to come from a manufacturing plant.

As seen with the slimmer PlayStation consoles Sony has released in the past, a PS3 Slim does seem inevitable. But is it inevitable right now? If so, is this the machine? This is all exceedingly heavy on the rumor and speculation, so we're not 100 percent convinced. Then again, we first saw the PSP-3000 through dodgy pics.

What does look convincing is that box. If there's anything to pin your hopes and dreams on, it's that piece of cardboard.

To speculate a minute... Sony (and their developers) know the PS3 isn't hacked, meaning people actually BUY PS3 games and they need to lower the price of the console to sell more of them.

That being said, maybe they gave up the more elegant "shiny" design for one they can offer people for $100 less? :hmm: Or maybe it's just a clone.. :wacky:

Maybe I'm alone with my opinion. But I think this is real. And you know: I don't say this very often.

The console is not shiny because what is shown in the pictures is just a dummy. So this is still work in progress. The product itself may vary from what you've seen now. However all of this really looks authentic. Like a manufacturing plant of Sony.

Even if we shouldn't hear about this for some time, consider it real. It will just take some time until they finished testing/constructing.

Agreed.. also this pic has Sony's name and PS symbol on it.. why would a knock-off cloner bother with those.

 Also, I just noticed the original source (LevelUP BBS) has now removed the page: http://bbs.levelup.cn/showtopic-803951.aspx

the console in the middle picture doesnt match the one on the cardboard box. the one on the box has the recessed bit with the eject button and power button and the console in the picture doesn't..

unless they're the outer casing of the new ps3 console.

i hope that they think forward with this console and implement an upgradeable graphics chip and ram.

For teh winnzz!!!! over Micro$hafted

LOL it's like April's Fools all over again...

This is obviously a fake folks. Don't wait or lose any sleep on it. It's definitely NOTHING close to what Sony has in the works. The slim version should have something of the appeal of the fat version, which this one totally destroys, and i wouldn't mind bringing in my hammer to greet this one... :chill:

Actually I studied the pictures more closely, and all those pictures are representing are TWO PARTS!!!

YES TWO PARTS: THE TOP of the console and THE BOTTOM! Look Closely and you will notice ...

Now, no wonder why the TOP half alone looked horrid! But combine it with the bottom half and actually it looks quite nice! :)
I had to quote myself because I was under the impression that THE TOP was the entire design of the new console! Well under close inspection I changed my opinion...

it also looks like it is the same material as the ps2's are made of so if it can boost there sales and more exclusives on it i dont care.

For anyone who has ever taken a PS3 apart (especially a newer one), the majority of the space that is used in the case is from the internal PSU, seconded by the BD drive.

If the PSU was external, and the drive slimmed down a bit (which, is just a matter of doing it, no tech hurdles), the system can in fact be that small.

Plus it looks like they finally got rid of the horrible Spiderman logo for the PS3.

Not saying its the greatest design in the world, but, it is better than the old boxes.

Why couldn't they just make it set-top box looking? Like a VCR (yes, there still around) or a DVD/BD player? It would have gone so much better in anyone's A/V Racks!

Looks very very real to me!

1. Obviously not a photoshop
2. Who would go to such an expense for some elaborate hoax?
3. Notice on the bottom the plug holes for the screws look exactly the same as the ones on the ps2.
4. They need to cut costs, period! (as any business does.)

Just my opinion but I would have to place my bet that the reason for the mat finish is because everyone complains about how easily the console gets scratched up and fingerprints all over it.

Funny still only 2 usb ports on this one XD
I do think they should still throw some chrome trim in there..

my 2 cents. :p

Alright, through some studying, the page was forced down by the Chinese government. You can tell from clicking on that image there and reading through the pages.

I'd have to say, that the only reason they would act on this in China is if it were real and Sony sent out a complaint.
However, I won't know more until I get Photoshop running and I can try and look at the image closer.

1. Man making something like this in photoshop is a cake walk.
2. You quite clearly never saw the IGN Legend of Zelda prank
3. Wouldn't that make it a PS2?
5. Agreed.

However upon reading this
Quote:
"Internet users found the Internet to endanger national security and social stability, ethnic separatist propaganda, the cult, pornography, intimidation, fraud and other harmful information, please select the relevant site supervision departments of public security alarm network."
By clicking on that image with the police officer and surfing through the website. I have to say that this may be real, not the final model, but a real slim PS3.

That motto up there is from one of the websites that is linked in that webpage linked by the police officer image. Such a site would have to commissioned by the Chinese Government to be able to say such a thing or else it wouldn't be around.

Folks, seriously do you really think that Sony would invest several hundred millions dollars on a the Playstation 3 logo and on advertising in order to impress that specific logo in the mind of every consumer just to change it suddenly in something like "PS3"?

Not to mention the ugliness of the font...

Yes, they would totally do that. They need to change in order to save themselves from falling. They just announced a loss in profit. A new image is required.

Makes you think it would be real because of copyright laws and trademarks. Plus, who would take the time to do all that for nothing? Or to face those lawsuits that would surly come your way. But like most have said, it's awful looking and very cheap plastic looking. I'll spend the extra 100 for something that looks and performs like an exotic sports car.

First off

Second,
It is indeed ugly, but upon looking closer at this thing with pain, I can tell you, it's not a final model if it is real. This is likely a mock up design they had in house.

I agree with you. I think that, with some backlit LEDs this case could be absolutely stunning.

First off, ones movie spoof is far different than one with the intent to sell another companies patient licensed trademarked product. Anyone can make a home brew movie and it go no where not even be picked up by a movie production company. The Zelda one just so happens to be a good one. There's super hero characters that have come up and they never made it to a film either. Or sequels to movies that get dropped as well.

Second, yes it's pretty clear to see it's just a plastic molding of an unfinished product. This is just a prank to get our attention I say, lol...... and it did. :D

I just got done tinkering around in photoshop, the main plastic part was obviously not photoshoped it's way too complex for anyone to do. However the box may be, if the other photos are real I doubt it but it would be extremely hard to photoshop the box as well.

However that Zelda thing proves nothing... That's a spoof and didn't cost very much money to make for IGN, so it's a pointless argument drop it please.

If you can't make it doesn't mean some one else can't. There is bound to be some one out there who in the span of a month (probably a Hell of a lot longer for this kinda result though) create something like this. Of course I've gone ahead and done the same thing you have and looked at it. This isn't photoshoped at all. It's unlikely they would ever want to go through some thing like this with Photoshop. If anything a mock up will cost them only around $100 or so, that's plastic, screws and some paint. You then simply take a month or so to make the thing if you know what you are doing.

As for the video, I'm touting it as a prank that cost very little, that was done in the span of around a month.
It proves that yes, people will take the time to do something that messes with people in the end.

Anyone else noticing how the box art is a completely different design compared to the alleged mockups? The mock-up system doesn't have the chrome or the shininess, and has the retracted disc thingy. My vote is somebody bought a cheap hong kong knock-off of a PS3, not so hard to imagine - I've seen many cheap clones of popular electronics
