Recently it was reported that Sony patented software-based PS2 emulation technology. This got users excited who own 80GB, 40GB and 160GB PS3 consoles without backwards compatability.

Although the article speculated that the upcoming PS3 slim may utilize this technology, today a German Web site has supposedly gained comment from a Sony employee, to quote:

This brings us to the German Web site Demo News, which claims to have gained comment from a Sony employee stating that full backwards compatibility is coming to US PS3's as a firmware update in the "next few weeks."

If this rumor is true, it will make many newer PS3 console owners very happy indeed!

I hope this is true!
Since I've got an 80gb PS3, hopefully I can finally play all those PS2 games that I've missed out on.
Considering that I didn't get to own a PS2 xD

i think the thing people keep forgetting is, how good this system actually is, what will it mean, how many of them will work, etc =P

i mean if its near 100% thats good, if its around 30 or so, a tad lack luster

If they are going to do one, they will be doing the other. Meaning, playing local PS2 Game Discs as well as downloaded off the Playstation Store.

It better be to load ps2 discs, and it better be hackable to load burnt ps2 discs... or else! :p

I think the article about the patent said the new method was aiming and could deliver 100% backwards compatibility, fingers crossed it works and they release it soon!

I find your reaction that they have to be hackable a bit exagerated... you can buy PS2 games very cheap, and if rumor will prove itself true, sony will most likely put it's top titles on PSN for download at reasonable price.

I can't

This will be just more business for sony. I dont see many people opting for ps2 games for purchase on a ps3 instead of some of the cheaper ps3 games but there are the old great ps2 games that some may want to play.

Since this site is mainly about doing things a console isnt mainly intended for i am hoping this introduces some method of hacking the ps3 and yes i hope it can play ps2 backups.

Apparently the emotion engine was already emulated in some systems but the graphics synthesizer is the missing hardware.

I sure wish they don't take their sweet time releasing this. When the Ps3 was announced and they mentioned backwards compatibility, everybody was excited to get it for the sole reason that they get to enjoy their prized ps2 games and i mean a whole lot. Sad thing was not all got to utilize this because of other factors like region compatibility and such. Hope that gets changed when they release this. Imagine having to classic ps2 games on your next gen console. If they really want to catch up to Wii IMO.

Regardless if this would either be downloaded thru PStore or thru discs it doesn't matter everybody just wants this badly.

my ps3 load ps2 games and is no hack and can extra info for the disc..

I thought the software emulated PS3's already do it without the Emotion Engine? The thing that the non-BC PS3's are missing is the graphics synthesizer.

I guess that is why I am kinda confused since the EE is not even necessary atm.

By saioke on 18 weeks ago:
I really hope this is a possibility. i mean, my ps3 can already play a lot of ps1 games, but i hope that they include ps2 games in the update. i really wouldn't mind playing them on my regular ps2, but it broke down not too long ago and i thought about selling my ps2 games, i had over 30 of them. hopefully this rumor becomes a fact.

By canabal on 18 weeks ago:
I hope this works just so I can play FF XII. My ps2 was busted by the time it came out, and I only recently got a ps3 so no BC for me.

I've been waiting to play MGS Snake Eater for a while now. Great news by the way!

Ditto here, I'm in the same boat. Never owned a PS2, but now that I have a PS3 there's some games I'd love to try, like Shadow of the Colossus and MGS 2 and 3. I truly hope this happens soon, and that it works well.

IMO all consoles should have full backwards compatibility, it just adds so much more. I mean who wants to have 5 consoles connected to their TV when they can have one that plays all generations. Some day we will have another non-optical media, though, and today's standard discs won't be able to load, so I'd imagine it will eventually go completely digital (download) only.

I echo what everyone else has said, I hope this really does come out soon. :p I have not been able to play ps1 and 2 games for some time, since 80GB model doesn't have support for them :(

By Daralion on 18 weeks ago:
Man that would be great. Of course I do still have my old PS2 hooked up, but I would love to pack it away and give it to my daughter later as a starter system for her.

this would be awesome! now i don't have to buy back the ps2 i sold to my friend a couple weeks back.

i miss playing MGS2 & 3

Uh... You can play PSone games on all models so yeah, it's just PS2 games that can't be played on newer models... yet ;)

#27
By tinjastin on 18 weeks ago:
well i think its quite unbelieving to be that true, but yeah if that rumors is possible, then all of us would be that happy!, anyways ps2 slim right now is quite cheap so why try to emulate?, instead go and get a ps2 slim, in that way you would have lesser problem playing those ps2 games ...

#28
By vegeta999 on 18 weeks ago:
Haha ive got a 40GB PAL PS3 without any PS2 B/C whatsoever and i cant wait till this is released, tho they're only having a problem with the GS ( graphics synthesiser) - what i dont get is, why cant the Nvidia RSX emulate the PS2s GS if the Cell can emulate the E.E chip ?

And im sure the PS2 backups would be loadable using the Disc swap trick, switch mods, or which ever other mods thts involve loading PS2 backups on PS3s.

#29
By snowisawesome00 on 16 weeks ago:
It would be awesome if it was 100% b/c. cuz i heard the 80gb with the EE emulator's b/c was not so great...
i guess it's better than nothing.

Hey all,

New to the forums, wanted to chime in on the compatibility news. I'm real happy they are finally doing this. I've got a boatload of PS2 games sitting around that I can finally play again. Huzzah!

Unfortunately, rumor does not necessarily equate to news :(

I recently called Sony about this issue. They informed me that they currently have no intention of making all models of the PS3 backwards compatible. Now that doesn't mean that they won't make it to where you can play PS2 games on all modles. However, I would assume that they will probally do the same thing they are doing with the PS1 games and just start adding PS2 games to the PSN. But we will just have to wait and see what they actually do.

I dont believe a damn thing that sony says. If they told me the sky was blue during the day without clouds i would have to look outside to be sure.
