Removal of Install Other OS feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system. |
It begs the question - why? There are two reasons:
1) Some HW incompatibility (doubtful, its the cell processor, rest of the HW will be similar)
2) A massive exploit in the OtherOS system that could only be fixed via a HW revision
Now, 2 would be nice, however finding it is something else all together, you do not remove one of your selling points without good reason - if I had to bet, something is terribly wrong that they do not want us to find out.
Finding it however, is no easy task!
Is it me or it really looks ugly? I don't know why but it reminds me of some chinese consoles I had as a little kid with the looks of playstation and the functionality of NES... LOL, anyway I hope CJPC's number 2 note to be proved as true!
I think that it looks alright to be honest. I know my PS3 seems to collect dust rather easily or the outside is rather prone to scratches. The new slim case material seems to combat that to some degree.
I am really happy that they decided to leave in a majority of the components that make the PS3 unique in what it offers. With the new price you really cannot beat what the PS3 is offering.
Also, the whole no more "Other OS". Do you think it has anything to do with that article a month back or so that talked about how they are developing a way for Linux to access the GPU?

That said, there could be a vulnerability too as the decision to boot otheros happens very early on in the boot process, so there's probably a choice of system software (XMB), debug or otheros.
What a complete crap... :shame:
They keep removing stuff and removing... And I was pretty sure they would put backwards compatibility in this new firmware but all they added was some crappy useless interface features...
Well...
Shame on them.

I don't understand the reason for removing the switch off button. For example when i don't use my ps for a long time i turn off from switch instead of unplugging, is more easy to do.
I love my good old big babe ...
