PlayStation 2's use the emotion engine as a processor, which was removed from PS3s to save money.

This killed off PS2 backwards compatibility, but Sony has a new software solution.

A patent filed by Sony has a method for the cell processor to emulate the emotion engine which can bring PS2 backwards compatibility to all PS3s.

To quote: There are two main ways to emulate hardware. Interpretation is when target code is decoded and converted into a language the host can understand. The other strategy is to decode and recompile programs in the host’s language.

Maybe the concept is better explained another way. Interpretation is like having someone constantly translating English to Japanese for you, non stop, twenty four hours a day wherever you go. Decoding and recompiling is like someone translating a sets of words and putting them in a dictionary you can reference.

Sony developed a way to translate instructions from an Emotion Engine chip into chunks that can be referenced.

Figure 2 from the patent is a schematic drawing of how the system works. Figure 3A is a drawing of the PlayStation 2’s chipset. Figure 3B is the emotion engine. Figure 4 is where the whole story gets interesting! It’s “an example of a host system based on a cell processor that may be configured to emulate the target system.” The target is figure 3B, the Emotion Engine.

There aren’t too many reasons why Sony would want the PS3’s Cell processor to emulate the PS2’s Emotion Engine and the key one is backwards compatibility.

Perhaps, a firmware update or the new PlayStation 3 slim, which Ars Technica say is coming this fall, will utilize this technology.

Stay tuned for more PS3 Hacks news!

I don't really understand. I have a 60g launch Pal PS3, without Emotion Engine, and it plays Ps2 games just fine...

How comes this is news? Of course Ps3/Ps2 backward compatibility was emulated somehow at least on the model I have...

It's good news mainly for those who don't currently have it (newer 80gb's, 40gb's and 160gb consoles without backwards compatability)... as the last part of the article suggests a firmware update or the PS3 slim may utilize this technology.

Because it could bring backwards compatibility to ALL PlayStation 3s. (Right? or is this just for the new slim model?)

Ya, Im a little confused about that myself. I wish my pal ps3 had the EE chip but I had to settle for emulation. It still has the GS chip though.
So what would emulate the GS chip on new ps3s, the CELL or the RSX?

For some reason the source article didn't link to the patents.. after a brief search, I believe these are the ones mentioned for anyone interested:

Hmm, in my opinion they got the label on the source article wrong.
They should have put "Full ps2 emulation on all ps3":)
Thats what I make from those diagrams. It seems to emulate the ps2 completely.

Heh, some of the devs here had said that the ps3 has had ps2 emulation a few firmwares ago and here's another confirmation ;)

I wonder when theyll release this. Maybe they are saving it for the ps3slim to launch.

Your launch ps3 had the hardware to play the ps2 games, my 40gb does not so this is big news to me. The latest ps3s can only play ps2 games by a method like this.

If they can make every single ps3 have ps2 compatibility my wild guess would be they are trying to make the same they did with the ps1 classics. That means we will have the best ps2 games on the psn to buy for 15$-20$ which is very good. Having a digital copy saves space, its easy, fast, fun plus it can be carried from account to account.

Not only that there are people that cant get those games as easily as people in the states, for instance my self. Having a packed psn store with ps1 and ps2 classics is like christmas to us non-usa people. Another great thing about this is you get the games whenever you want them for a resonable price.

Lately Sony has proven to have a lot of interest in online store and so far so good. I hope we get to have ps2 emulation for free on every single console so we can have full games right off the store. Theres people out there that have the money and want to buy those games but are unavailable.

they have to patent a technology that noone else is allowed to use anyway?

This is very good news! Because when we can emulate PS2 games... the way to a loader may be a bit closer!

By PS3 News on 25 weeks ago:
It would be nice if it allowed everyone to use PS3 USBLD Loader to run their PS2 back-ups on the PS3... instead of just those with 4 USB ports. :D

This is very exciting news! I originally wasn't interested in the Slim PS3 but if this is what they plan on adding into it, I may have spoke too soon.

Obviously, this is only in the event that this actually becomes more of a reality than it is now. I will still be torn on decided to keep my large model over the slim, I really think that losing OtherOS support is taking a big hit. I see enormous potential in it and I don't want to lost it if I decide to upgrade it to the slim model solely for this. I would love to finally be able to play some of my old PS2 games on my PS3 but I have lived without it for this long and besides it gives my actual PS2 a workout once in a great while.

Either way, Huge props to the one who found this! I am highly excited about this. Now if it actually comes out i'll be battling it out with my own mind over what to do next. :hmm:

Looks like the patent was filed on December 2008... it could explain why there was no updates on backward compatibility for a while.

I have to admit, I never understood why BC was always made such a big deal. I rarely (if ever) go back and play old games once I've moved to the next generation. And if I do, I just use the PS2 I have sitting around to do that (actually I got rid of mine already, but that's because I didn't want to play any old games, and sis wanted the ps2).

I mean I understand the benefit of it and all, just alot of times I hear it hyped like it's one of the most awesome features ever. And THAT is what I don't get, it's nice, but not THAT awesome imo (maybe that's just cause I always keep the old system til I realize I'm not playing any old games at all anymore).

That being said, this is good news because evidently alot of people do want this. And this should prove to help Sony with the evident demand for this feature to be put back in.

And who knows, I might even get around to going back and finally playing the old Ico games and GOW games, without having to go get another ps2 (or bothering getting that one back from my sis). I think where this will really shine is in being able to download ps2 games and it actually work now. ;)

It's about damn time...

Too bad by doing this, all those launch consoles will lose some worth. I don't care about that tho, I have a 40gb :P, this is good news to me :)

I wouldnt expect Sony to implement it into a FW update until PS2 HW sales have died down a lot.
Its just a good marketing strategy that way. It would be a great reason for PS2 owners to upgrade (i.e. want to play next gen games also) and I think Sony realises this so I may be wrong lol.

I think i wasn't understood... ^^

I meant we all know that Ps2 emulation throught software-only on Ps3 was possible since the Launch Pal ps3s don't have the Emotion Engine or any hardware linked to Ps2 (correct me if I'm wrong).

I understand that it's great that we have a confirmation about this, but Sony could have done it since the beginning I believe.

So ,to me, it is not news that Ps2 emulation on Ps3 throught software-only is possible. If I understand correctly, the "news" here is that Sony confirmed it and might put it in a future update. Well... I thought it was already common knowledge.

Was I the only one waiting to see if Homebrew emulation would be out faster than Sony's? :D

Could these patents and such make it easier for PS3 Devs to create an iso loader? I mean if Sony can create an emulator embedded in the Cell to read Ps2 discs then can't Devs make an emulator to run of backed-up DVD's?

Well I personally am excited because I never had a PS2 and there are only a few games I really would like to play, so it's not worth it for me to shell out the money for a PS2. Especially since the feature used to be included in PS3's and was removed.

I think you did get the point at the end, I for example didnt play all the ps2 games I wish I had. Having ps2 compatibility on my ps3 is good but not as good as having the games on the psn store. I can go back to play games I missed out that are playing a major role today, like GOW a game I didnt play.

Or what about a great rpg you didnt get to play, lets be honest the ps2 had hundreds and hundreds of amazing titles and I doubt you had the chance to play them all. The ps2 lived for almost 10 years surprising gamers and you can get almost any genre out of it. I do go back to consoles or emulators to play games that I missed out, like chrono trigger or final fantasy vii I played them for the first time last year.

I understand that a lot of people dont want to play something "old" but I and a lot of people do play old stuff thats epic or that made a difference. I enjoy an old game as much as a new game as long as its a GOOD game, specially RPGS and shooters.
