Update: A translated Install Guide is now available.

Today rickylyh let us know Fixstars Corporation of Japan has released a free 14-day trial of CodecSys CE-10, an H.264 Software Encoder for use with Sony's PlayStation 3.

It was first announced a few months ago, and although Fixstars' English Site doesn't have the trial available yet it is expected sometime this month.

The CE-10 software gets installed on a PC, but allows users to access the power of the PS3 via OtherOS as a way of accelerating video encoding.

Cool news indeed, and let the speed tests begin!

Thanks for the quick guide Ricky.. Google/Babelfish wouldn't translate it for me because it was a https address. :p

I grabbed it and added it to the download section. As Ricky stated, for the moment it's Japanese only so unless you can read Japanese you may wish to wait for the English version to be released. If anyone does give it a try, feel free to share your results here! :tup3:

Here is a roughly translated guide from:

As i read this for the second time a lamp goes on !!!

So we need full access or the full power of the PS3 via OtherOS to realize a project like "PS3 Cluster Hacking" thingy.

So this programm runs on WinXP Machine but could access the whole power of PS3 via OtherOS... ding, ding, ding, ding, ding BooOOooOOooOoOOmMMMM.

I think to hack a Win App will be more easyer than to hack the PS3 itself.

Could you follow what i mean? ;)

By Nairb on 24 weeks ago:
cfw I was thinking this when I saw it but I didn't post anything.

I mean if you think about it if you can get a program like this to run over ethernet there's a way. :wow:

There's a way to hack anything, just have to find that hole.

By speedxl on 24 weeks ago:
Its still the same situation that with linux, you always has had access to the cell-be and spus, the only thing you cant access its the acceleration of the gpu, and with this app its the same, its only optimized to work more efficiently having more RAM at its disposal etc..

The problem with linux on Ps3 its not lack of power, its lack of custom programs that use the Cell-BE.

#9
By cfwprophet on 24 weeks ago:
Ok but than we now have a option to work on. Even if the program just calls or better use the cell-be we now have a way opened.

Or maybe not.Its hard for me to say it because im not a coder but what i know is that every really good coder will not support the thing we want to have to be done.

But with this program we maybe have a option to moddify and use it for our idee's.

#10
By denunes on 24 weeks ago:
yeah, if this is based on the YDL... have the same kind of acess to the ps3.
could be easyer to do soft in windows maybe...

otherOS is not ps3OS, so no internal kernel. it's my 2cents.
see ya

Hello Everyone,

Well I installed the program on the PC, entered the license key, and now I am stuck at the black codecsys splash screen. I have tried all the buttons across the bottom, but can't find the combination. Any help?

Well after thorough testing, the speed is indeed realtime. I am truly amazed. Now for the bad :( Despite my best efforts, I can't seem to adjust the resolution it's encoding to something smaller than my source...

This is really interesting. Though unless they sell it at a competitive price point I think cuda still offers the most cost effective solution. We'll see. Also quick question. Is the software for windows in Japaneses too or just the ps3 utility?

If you want english GUI, change the Culture registry key from ja-JP to en-US under CodecSYS CE-10 and the GUI changes to english. Help stays japanese.

Well i got it working in english using the above reg hack. Over all its Pretty dissapointing , i had hoped to rencode all my movies using the program but it wont accept any of my video files as the are neither uncompressed avi nor MPEG. It really is annoying that it wont rencode divix files. Just have to stick to super video encoder unless anyone knows how to add extra codecs for video input.

#22
By stlava on 23 weeks ago:
By the way the key is located at:

Try to adjust the frame rate. I had the same problem, but I needed to set the frame rate from 29.9 to 25 (PAL source). After this, it works, also with divx.

But I have problem, with the audio track. I have ac3 in my divx-es and cannot convert to AAC.

Any idea does have any limitation on trial ?

Thanks for all the details! I have been eagerly waiting on this to come out because I have some mkv files that I want to transcode for play on my PS3, and if I did it with my personal computer it would take about 3 days (no exaggeration!) Has there been any word as to when the English version will be released?

#30
By Tsusai on 23 weeks ago:
Would probably be better if we somehow figured out how to mod the open source x264 encoder to use cell threads. Just my two cents :)

#31
By Akko on 23 weeks ago:
If I can get this working it will be a god send to anyone with old mkv files with too many reference frames, frustrating me to hell at the moment. Seems to be every other file i get at the moment arrgghh!!

#32
By repdetect2 on 23 weeks ago:
Simply Amazing. :p After working out the bugs, it performs better than expected. I was able to encode a .m2v taken from a dvd that was 1hr45mins in about 35 minutes.

Remuxed the AC3 track, and all is good. If more formats can be supported, and different audio options the future looks bright!

I can only answer the last one.

You can use "megabit" but the conversion will be slower due to your small network "pipe" (line) between your pc and your ps3. In order for the conversion to go as quick as possible, you need to be on a Gigabit network. Gigabit will shuffle the data quicker between both machines and will make your conversion go as fast as it can.

#35
By Masur on 23 weeks ago:
Hello urbanracer34,

Thanks for the answer.

But somebody know why i have the limitation of 2 FPS ?

#36
By stevebull on 23 weeks ago:
Those of you that are looking to convert mkv files, you will first need to put them through mkv2vob to change to .mpg container.
But the video will have to be 1080/720 and not cropped as i have failed to load any that have been.
It is also very fast at encoding.

Well i have tried changing the frame rate but no matter what i do the program always says " the specified input file is invalid " . Hope the full version works better.

Hello Guys,

I have an answer from the fixstars support i had a problem with the fps so i emailed the support:

for all that have FPS problems:

Quote:
Thank you for your interest in our products.

In CE-10, when PS3 is used as the accelerator for the H.264 encoding
process, full HD (1920x1080) image can be encoded into 22-23 frames per
second.
CE-10 realizes the high speed process by transferring each frame data
that consist of movie files read from the Windows GUI through Ethernet
and compressing them in PS3.
Therefore, if intended performance is not achieved, the following
reasons may be considered:
* HDD read capability on PC is not sufficient.
* Your Ethernet adaptor only supports 100base-T.
* PC and PLAYSTAION3 are connected by a network HUB.

In order to realize the high speed encoding that maximizes PS3,
you have to use a high speed part as the HDD where movie files are
stored and connect PC and PS3 directly to Gigabit Ethernet
using cross cables.
