It seems that there are a lot of people, including myself receiving this error message at the moment and are unable to sign in to the PSN.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I'm still worried I'm gonna get stung with a console repair of some kind.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Fingers crossed its all on sony's end..
there were problems with logging in and connecting to the official ps forums yesterday. they did some modifications to the log in system from what i can tell. maybe what they did caused problems with the ps3 trying to connect to the network as well. i would keep checking around online and trying again tomorrow. since it is sunday here in the states, they probably won't get to it until tomorrow, monday, which is a normal work day.
No games with trophies will work either.
And any downloads don't work (all owners removed) so it says invalid copyright information.
And the date is set to December 31 1999, which you can't even set it to manually (lowest date is 2000).

MW2 doesn't quit out if I go to multiplayer as fast as I possibly can. So you can play splitscreen or LAN multiplayer.
I moved this to the Site News, and +Rep
spark32!
One of the Devs here actually had it happen to his PS3 and is investigating it... perhaps Sony pushed updated certs over PSN that were messed up, and it busted boxes. I guess we'll find out what happened soon enough.
I also added Sony's "official" Twitter response to the first post, to quote: http://twitter.com/SonyPlayStation/status/9801870518

We're aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.

Update: It's now confirmed that simply fixing the PS3's date and rebooting the console doesn't fix the errors (corrupted themes, can't sign in, etc). Is anyone here experiencing these issues with a PS3 Slim, or only the Fat PS3 consoles?
I thought it was my connection problem, so I'm not only one here... whew.
60GB Fat console here. Stopped working just before 12:00 GMT for me.
Other people have been speculating that it may be related to the date changing from 28/02 which would fit with the time my console stopped working and the fact you cant update the date/time via internet.
Majority of reports I've read are from fat owners but quite a few slim reporting error as well.
Update: Microsoft hacked Sony and tried to make their console better, but instead they caused the RRoD to spread to the PS3 and now the xombie (Not to be confused with zombie) apocalypse is happening.
yeah my 40GB CECHG01 is getting this too. Maybe by the end of 12/31 1999 this will be fixed.
Another update from IRC... the Dev tried the PS3 Recovery Menu that was added after 2.5 Firmware on the second boot. Hold it down until it turns on, then turns back off... then hold it down again until it beeps twice I believe and (per Google) perform the following:
1. Turn off PlayStation 3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
Unfortunately, re-updating to 3.15 also didn't work for him... so the next idea is to attempt rebuilding the database. If anyone figures it out, feel free to reply!
My 60GB Fat PS3 started doing this around 5p.m. central time. It won't even let me play Modern warfare 2 campaign. This sucks.
I live in Australia and have same problem, Just called sony theres a pre-recorded message that says PSN is down try again in 1 hour.
They're probably upgrading or just having issues, JUST KEEP YOU EYES OPEN FOR BOGUS HOMEBREW KILLING FIRMWARE. lol but looks like its a world wide issue.
My ps3 got hit as well. Got the date change and gameshare games don't work anymore.
This shows that it's possible for sony to affect our PS3s without our knowledge and over the internet doesn't it? Any chance this has something to do with the recent developments in hacking the ps3?
Wonder if sony can fix the problems on all the ps3s now... or maybe they will put out a firmware update that fixes this problem but also plugs exploits to the ps3. Sinister... lol
Same issue on my 80GB fat (upgraded to 160GB). Got this around 7pm eastern time, still an issue 2.5 hours later.
I hope this is just a huge PSN error that will be resolved on Sony's side of things... if this is a hardware issue i am not paying a cent. It worked less than 3 hours ago, i turned it off ate diner and now all the sudden it doesnt work. The only way i see this having happened was they tried to fix something that wasnt broke and broke it in the process.
what really bothers me is that they dont have a place on their website for psn status... i have to come to a 3rd party site to find out what's up... horrible support on their behalf.

Well, awhile back there was that widespread "305R" issue which affected Fat PS3 consoles... so while it's unlikely, it is obviously within the realm of possibility.
This is why it would be great if users who are experiencing this can specify if their PS3 is a
Fat or Slim unit in replies. Thus far, it appears most have Fat PS3 who are experiencing it.
Yes is happening with me also,
so all the software validation works online? What happens when you are whitout a broadband connection? This is a strange thing!
Damn, they got me too. Was watching American Dad via Tversity on the home network tonight. Didn't go on PSN since earlier this afternoon. Read the news here, turned on PS3, date shows 12/31/99.
Able to load Fallout 3 (standard not GOTY) but the DLC for it is "not present" during save game loads and weapons/locations for DLC are missing.
Thanks Sony!
System Specs : 40GB Fat

Fat ps3 here then...
It looks as if PSN is down, if they wanted to stop homebrew or further dev they would just do it, it keeps people intrested but dosen't give us all so we still hope for it ie: so we keep our PS3's. The PSN network has just gone down. I wouldn't worry about it.
I wonder if "foul play" is involved or just a coincidence...

Still not able to log in on my end, but I was able to download and install update for Life With Playstation (F@H) to 1.21 just now.
i'm fine over here... ps3 slim.
i can confirm that all firmware is affected on this...
i'm running on my PS3 via proxy to access PSN without touching my firmware.. and got my date back to 1/1/2000 wtf? and also got the same error like yours guys..
fw: 3.01
PS3 : 40GB Fat
F/W : 3.15
Here is whats up on my system now. I have two accounts, one for me and one for my g/f. I buy games from PSN on my account. As of right now for Trine and PJ Shooter this is happening ...
My Account
Trine and PJ Shooter : An Error Occurred During the Start Operation (8001050F)
8001050F is the same error code for PSN.
G/F Account
Trine and PJ Shooter : The Copy Protection Information is Invalid (80029513)
Hard to say virus or hack at this time when it seems to be only the phat consoles being affected. On other board I see Slim guys saying " I'm good " while the phat guys are saying " FFFFUUUUUUuuuuu ".
Could be a move for Sony to push the Slims and get the phats off the market, lol.... Then with the issue here, offer up a $100 coupon for your broken phat when dropped off at a GameStop or something, lol.
Man, GOW3 is just about to drop too..

Let's pray a system glitch and the Sony nerds are hard at work to fix the issue.
Another thing I noticed ... While checking trophies I noticed Uncharted 2 is back to 100%, but the other day when the Map DLC came out it was showing as 80 something percent. I didn't download the DLC for Uncharted 2. As well, Fallout 3 trophies are no where to be seen in my list.
80 gb fat here... i have the date error as well as the coded error mentioned in this article.
I noticed it when trying to play rock band. it allowed us to play, and my friend was trying to play a downloaded song and it kept kicking him out. on further inspection, I also noticed that it doesn't even recognize the rock band 1 songs loaded onto the system. i really hope this gets fixed.
does sony have somewhere in their terms that if there's a crash like this, they aren't liable for costs? it would really suck if a bunch of us lost all of our data. it would look terrible on them as a company, too.
well my 2 60gb and 20gb refuse to log on same error as everyone else, the slim i bought for my wife logs me on perfectly fine... the guy that mentioned sony pushing slims... when i had mine repaired they offered to keep my 60 and send me a 120 slim for 120 usd. sounds to me they DO NOT want phatties out in the world for some reason or another.
I added Sony's secong Twitter update to the first post: http://twitter.com/SonyPlayStation/status/9808291518

I had one of my 2 80g's fixed not long ago. I was asked about trading in for a Slim. That why I was wondering why just the older models going down here. Which I hope is not the case, lol. But then again, I'll trade my 2 phats for 2 Slims at $100ea off or so. But the data on the hard drives should have no issues at all from being backed up now.
ok, i played uncharted 2 about 4 hrs ago, the only weird thing i noticed was a bunch of lag. so is it "safe" to go on psn, its not like i can call Sony to fix a debug console.
Well it was bound to happen after the recent HV exploits/hacks by George Hotz and the way i think they done it maybe crippled flash on purpose to stop/alter/ make it hard to trigger exploit on FATs and on slim no HV no crippled flash. This is just like MS done with Jtagble 360s by blowing efuses in 8955 dashboard updates. Maybe after this mess even Linux stoped working anyone with this problem can confirm that is linux on his PS3 still working or FAT PS3 just got busted by SONY.

Everyone READ THIS PLEASE.
Here's what's going on right now: something with the PS3's internal clock has borked in some pre-slim models. This is not a PSN issue; it has to do with your PS3's clock. This clock is NOT related to the OS clock. It seems to be a leap year bug. Setting your clock ahead will do nothing. All PS3s around the world were affected at the exact same time.
Does this affect me?
-If you have a Slim PS3, you're good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a "fat" PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.
What does this bug mean?
-If affected, your date and time has been set to a random past date. This prevents you from signing into PSN, playing any PSN games, or using any DLC. Your trophies will also not display correctly or be able to sync.
How do I fix it?
-You can't. Even if you don't sign into PSN, it won't help. This is a hardware issue.
So, what do I do?
-Wait 24 hours. Other products that have had similar bugs have corrected themselves after the "bugged" day. On Monday around 8pm central time, all PS3s will automatically correct themselves... maybe.
-If that doesn't work, we'll need a firmware update from Sony, which should be a pretty important priority for them right now.
Did I lose my data/themes/etc?
Your save data/games/dlc/themes are fine. They'll be fixed when the PS3 is fixed. Trophies are uncertain right now, but they'll be fine if you've synced them before the PS3 was bugged. Unsynced trophies are an unknown right now.
So there ya go, my handy FAQ.
|
I hope my ps3 isn't messed up but ya never know.. i'm gonna check.
Guys I'm not so sure that your downloads are safe (like downloaded games, DLC, etc).
If you have any downloaded games, and they don't run, it is because it has invalid copyright information.
Now you ask, what does that mean?
Press Triangle on any of your downloaded games and view the information on it, scroll down, and beside it, you will see that it has NO owner.
That means that every single activated account on your PS3 has been ERASED resulting in any downloads that require some sort of activation do not currently work.
Now, this does not necessarily mean you cannot get it back (if you GameShared with someone, then you might be out of luck).
To get your games and DLC to work again, wait until you can sign into PSN, then redownload anything that's in your download list on any/all of your accounts that you have ever downloaded anything onto your console, which will reactivate all of your downloads that you have installed on your hard drive which you downloaded on that account.
I can't sign on to the PSN. My DLC is inaccessible and the system clock is messed up. Come on Sony get it together. Please stand-by as I contact my attorney regarding this matter.
If someone is bored and wants to give it a try - gut your PS3, disconnect the battery going to the syscon. The RTC is done by the syscon, removing the battery should reset the date.
If it works or not, is another question, but keep it unplugged (the CR2032) for a few minutes, and stick it back in!
It's crazy that as soon as Geohot found an exploit for the ps3 that this type of thing happened... TO ONLY THE PHATS!!! This could be sony's way of forcing everyone with a phat to update their firmware so they can remove the install another OS feature.
Sony Twitter Update
[quote=SonyPlaystation] PSN status update (part 2): Readers/followers are confirming that "slim" units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.[/quote]
That confirms what we've all had a hunch about.

As requested, I have now linked your reply in the first post
spark32 so those interested will see it. I have also added the second update of Sony confirming the "non-Slim" hunch as well.
I am getting the same error code (60Gb Fat with 3.15 Firmware).
Unable to access PSN, lost trophy information for Assassins Creed 2 and can no longer play the game, Marvel vs Capcom 2 has reset to trial mode and the TV icon on the XMB has gone too. Hopefully Sony can find a solution for this soon.
I was at a friends house earlier today and he has a 60gb phat ps3 which got the error code and lost trophies so i was worried, luckily so far I'm one of the unaffected phat users (Original 60gb) on 3.15. I leave my ps3 always signed into the PSN and I'm still online. So if I haven't had the problem yet I should be fine?
Was checking the Sony forums to see what was going on and it seems that the forums are down now.
I went in the kitchen to grab a burger and a drink. When I came back into the room my PS3 was frozen on the community play screen (nhl 10).. nothing new.. so I restart the machine and I get the 8001050F BS... They need to fix this... My twin bro on his new slim is cruising right along.. even called to laugh at me about it.
As long as its the clock prob and its fixed quick cool, I have had my phatty for 2 yrs now and this is prob #1.
Damn!!! they got me too
i'll give it till tomorrow, till i try the battery removal CJPC suggested. i'm saving money right now so when everyone starts dumping there fatties cheap, I'll be ready ... lmao.
Okay i assumed that it was only the PSN network that managed to send a bug to our ps3's and cause them to malfuntion but the same bug is happening to people who don't even have their ps3 online. To see if this information is correct i called my friend who doesn't have internet but owns a ps3 (to think in this day and age there are people who can afford a ps3 but not the internet) and asked him to see if he could play any of his games and behold the same error everyone else has.
My PS3 fat 60 gb went down like at 10 eastern time i tried to log back in but i couldnt. I start up FIFA 10 and it says that it couldnt download trophy info and that it will now quit the game.

Someone on IRC named
zarge confirmed this works, however, you have to open the PS3 so it may be safer to wait for Sony's "proper" fix... but he claims he did it and is now playing MW2 fine with his Fat PS3 console.
Got back from chilling out at a relative's. Decided to turn on my PS3 w/o internet, and it pulled that 12/31/1999 crap. Manually set the clock, restarted, and the clock is fine. As for PSN, can't log in. Wipeout HD and fl0w run fine.
Correction: My purchased copy of Wipeout HD runs in trial mode.
mine has the same error and the date was set wrong but i changed it back via the xmb bar and restarted ps3 it retained the date but i still get the error and cant connect to psn so i dont think the date is the problem. my ps3 is already taken apart, but i didnt have to take out the battery to adjust the date.. damn i hope this gets resolved soon.
ahhh i just beat uncharted 2 earlier tonight and now all the uncharted2 trophies are gone!
Ahhh I want to play!! I bought Bayonneta yesterday before going to work, and I was planning to play now!! I can't even pass the loading screen!

Yeah, the Bayoneta patch is a necessity for the game to play.
from what i understand this is a hardware bug with the rtc chip. but what is funny is the fact that the dates are getting set back to before the ps3 was even close to being released. hell, even the ps2 wasn't released until march of 2000 in japan. seems like the y2k bug is 10 years 2 months to late, lol!
to add to the thread, i have an 80gb motorstorm unit and it is affected as well. i don't have time to take it apart until tuesday after class. however i will take it apart and report back the results. until then my ps3 will be off, somehow i just don't trust a software fix for this from sony.
Update: My PS3 Slim (message above was from FAT) does also not start all the games :S
Wow, has that been happening while I was offline on PSN throughout half the day? Dang, I hope we get it fixed soon.
...well, at least I wasn't playing PS3 when that happened; although I thought I screwed up my PS3 when I got the error.
Edit:... uh, I didn't get to play any PS3 games yet. Uh oh, better check on it tomorrow.

I have an 80gb motorstorm unit as well and I just dropped a 650gb drive in it 3 weeks ago. It's been running like a champ with not one issue. Now this... ouch. I'm really hoping you're wrong about a software fix... hehe.
Is it just me or does this stink of foul play. It just seems a little bit of a coincidence that this should only effect PS3 PHAT (HACKABLE).
If this is the case then $ony have just lost a loyal customer. Because if this is how they reward you for years of supporting there systems the can feck off!!!
It'll be interesting to see how Sony fix this if they can.
Mine wasn't even powered on when it seemed to strike and I only connect to the internet when I need to upon watching the error, it almost immediately disconnects from network on bootup with the 8001050F.
Thinking about it and stating the obvious, if it can happen to a fat PS3 that's not connected to the internet and setting time locally doesn't help, it'd be so it has be some sort of hardware error (I've got a 40GB Fat with 3.10) and not something remotely added to stop an exploit from running (unless they're using sneaker mechanisms to deploy it like embedding it in demos, etc.)
I almost think that Sony need some sort of low-level hardware access to do fix it without replacing every single PS3 fat globally (almost like having to hack it themselves :-)
Almost all of my games are stuffed so I'll have to failback to watching my Blu-rays for a while. I just hope we haven't all ended up with a Sony Blu-Ray-Station 3"
Just finished talking with a buddy who ran into this issue on his PS3 TEST - he removed the RTC battery for about 10 minutes as I suggested earlier, stuck it back in and he is now back up and running, on PSN and everything!
So, if you guys want to give it a try and your box has been opened / out of warranty - it should work!
I'd just, for now, set it to today / tomorrow's (3/1/2010) date, to be safe!
I've got a FAT PS3.
Was playing Prince of Persia, last trophy needed was the all combo's done. Did them and didnt get a trohy. So look around and finally see the tophies for POP are missing from my Trophies list !!
So, Did a Rebuild DB. Did not fix issue. Have Rag Doll Kungfu full. Its reporting its corrupted and to redownload.
Simple Awesome

JUST what I thought!
They maybe will push an update saying OtherOS has to be removed due to issues.
THIS COULD GET BIG!
well, i have a 60gb and all the date etc was reset but mine was reset back to 31 12 1998:S, i took a picture of it before i changed the date and after everything seems fine, i wasnt even online so i dont know how the hell my date and all that changed i played gta earlier with no network connection, but hey as for psn i they want me to firmware update
oh i havent even been on there for a while... in the end sony will offer some free crap they was supposted to be £1.99 for free thats what they will proberly do and on top give us a hole new f/w update

lovely sony, now i am a bit frustrated maybe they deserve there console to be used for piracy??...
(if i have time i might upload my pictures later)
if i disconnect my internet before turning on my ps3 and dont connect online will i be affected? i wanna play borderlands but too scared to turn on the ps3 in case i wont be able to play it for days...
Basically it just reiterates what they said in their Twitter (http://twitter.com/sonyplaystation) updates, but Sony has now posted a PS Blog update: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/02/playstation-network-status-update/

Paranoid much? Please I don't think this has to do with the hacks... It's kind of obvious what actually happened (hardware bug - to do with date problems).
Just relax guys.
I tried PS3 Proxy but no success. So I went back to regular WiFi. I can access to Internet then went to PSN and nothing happens.

I agree!! Sony will fix this problem otherwise they will lose big time on these and thats not in there interest as multi international company...
Can confirm removing the internal battery works, was able to login fine and redownload the activation for Wipeout HD (was saying its a demo) looks like I need to redownload Fury addon tho. All PS Classics seemed to work anyway. I reckon this will be an easy software fix for Sony.

CONFIRMED!!!
I'm from New Zealand, 40gb phat PS3. I just took the battery out (took 15mins easy as if your a bit techy) and it works pefect.
Time to get my MW2 fix :-)
i was investigating the matter of this error (8001050F) on playstation website, when i came across this http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/8001050F-Help-Please/m-p/30491999 dated 2007, someone posting for help on the same issue... so its happened before.
Really interesting that pulling the RTC battery serves as a workaround. Has anyone tried (after doing the battery fix) setting their clock to 28/02/2010 at 23:59 GMT and waiting a minute to see if the problem reoccurs?
I wonder if the RTC is going to an invalid date (29/02/2010) or possibly overflowing some sort of count (eg. something similar to epoch).
So i dont get it, granted im not as technical as many of the people here, but what exactly triggered this? What was so special about todays date? Why didnt this affect slims?
Had i not read this thread, i'd simply assume PSN was down, but from what i can gather it is up and running and the issue is actually some conflict with the date being set incorrectly because of some hardware glitch?
As for the notion that this was a planned or purposefully triggered event from Sony...i'm open to the idea but one major issue conflicts with that. If Sony had planned this, lets say hypothetically as a test to see if they could target just fat's for a future sneaky update... they wouldnt have let it last for so long. If anything theyd want it to last relatively short, long enough to get some attention but short enough to appear to be on top of fixing it (good PR). Last thing theyd want to do before a sneaky patch is aggravate the people they are about to upset.
Im interested to see what course of action is taken to fix this, will they;
let it run its course/self correct
fw update, possibly including some other unwanted tweak like otheros removed
milder update that just resolves the issue
At this point i dont see them "recalling" any units either... it would make them look horribly bad if they had to recall what i will guess to be tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of units. Not to mention how many of us would not be willing to give up the fat for a slim.

Probably the error code indicates an invalid date. I bet that guy either had a dead RTC battery or somehow changed the clock on his PS3 to something in the past.

Im interested to see what course of action is taken to fix this, will they;
let it run its course/self correct
fw update, possibly including some other unwanted tweak like otheros removed
milder update that just resolves the issue
At this point i dont see them "recalling" any units either... it would make them look horribly bad if they had to recall what i will guess to be tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of units. Not to mention how many of us would not be willing to give up the fat for a slim.
|
Considering the earlier posts from others confirming that resetting the RTC is a workaround for the problem, I imagine absolute worst case Sony will issue an update that does just that.
Also, the problem is affecting people with offline PS3's, so the idea that it has anything to do with some clandestine plan on Sony's part is just pure paranoia, IMO.

Basically it seems to be a Y2K like bug of sorts. Possibly having something to do with leap year?

The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine; the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.
What’s apparently wrong, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It’s either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can’t do because the front-end calendar doesn’t have a 2/29/2010. Everything started to collapse around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT.
And the PS3 launched in 2006; it’s hit four 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system’s been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I’m less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point).
Hey.
I got the trophy error that everyone's experiencing but I'm not playing online. I put another game in and it seemed to be ok.
Some thread advised formatting the drive. all that did was delete all my media. If the error problem is the psn then why would I be getting "registration of trophy information could not be completed" error 8001050f?
Its frustrating. I love that game. Any ideas how the system works in this situation?
Cheers,
cc

you do have a brilliant point, even though i was not plagued with this issue since i have a slim, i was concerned and up to date with what was going on, i totally agree with you.
When I first heard Geohot managed to dump the hypervisor I immediately disabled the internet connection on my PS3 assuming Sony would try to screw with people. I haven't updated since then and my firmware is still on 3.1 or something.
What a surprise if this is a hardware problem instead of foul play on behalf of Sony but they may very well take advantage of this to force people to update to something that may make work on the PS3 a hell of a lot harder.
I haven't turned on my PS3 in days but I assume since this is a clock problem as soon as I turn on my PS3 Phat I'll be screwed as well.

I am off line and am getting the error 8001050f.
Registration of trophy... its happening with MW2.
Is there a fix in layman terms?
cheers,

hey guys my fat 40gb ps3 is affected too. the date on mine said 1/1/2000
i tried the restore option but no luck. i cant play any games at all.
i can still go online with it but still no psn access.
i can confirm that not letting your ps3 connect to the internet at all (before going on and receiving the problem) stops you from getting the problem.. so the problem is definately on Sony's side. whether its PSN or automatic time-update (possible some other auto update things that have nothing to do with PSN as well) are the problem.
I can't believe this happened this morning and is still an issue now. I have the 80gb, And I am hurtin to play some MW2. I have read a few threads that people are pulling the clock batteries, and that this is solving the problem, but what I would like to know is why that is working before I go ripping into my console.

The same problem also happened without any connection to PSN, is not sony's side, in this case the problem would involve all consoles, for example CECHL03 work fine.
People are posting on other forums that if you make a new account it works, but you can't use your main account.
Dang, it seems that my got hit as well.

This can be true, but I've try to do a factory reset, create a new user and join my old PSN account, fail.
The license database is user-related, probably a new user with a new PSN account can "resolve" the problem.
My phat 60gig jap ps3 has this error, but my mums phat 80gig uk ps3 is fine no error yet still signed in on psn and the date displays 1/3 so i guess it will be ok for my mums.
I'll probably try the rtc battery method later see if it sorts mine out.
Craig
I've only connected to the psn once when i was on 2.8 and after that i updated manually. My ps3 set its date to 1/1/2000 but for some reason i can still play trophy games.
It seems that the definitive fix for this issue is to unplug RTC battery from PS3 motherboard, it's too bad tough that it's positioned on the bottom side and need a lot of work to get there (not too buch but it's not a very rapid fix).
http://www.consolezombie.com/PS3/Sony-PS3-Disassembly-Tutorial.html
From what i've dig up from the net it's totally possible that this issue to be gone tomorrow morning when the RTC changes to a real (working date) date, in other word it changes form 29/02 to 01/03.
A short desctription of the problem is found here: http://boards.ign.com/ps3_general_board/b8267/189824800/p1/?0 but if you will google for PS3 RTC fix / problem you will find threads with 60+ pages in it...

The layman fix is to wait until tomorrow at midnight GMT (around 4PM PDT).
To put it simply, your PS3 has two calendars. The one on the screen (software) and another stored inside a chip (hardware). The one in the chip seemingly has a bug where it thinks there is a Feb 29, 2010. This causes problems with various software components because they do not understand what Feb 29, 2010 is.
Once we wait another day, the chip will think it is March 1, 2010 and the software components will understand this date, so problem solved.
You might also wonder why is the date based off the GMT timezone when you live in another timezone? I have a theory for that...
Imagine you downloaded a beta which expired on Jan 1st. If you go to run it, then your PS3 tells you sorry it has expired. Now if you could turn the clock back to Dec 31st, you could still play it, right? So to stop you from doing that, the PS3 always uses GMT time and instead does a calculation for the time that is displayed on screen.
Let's say the PS3 knows it is 9:00 AM in GMT timezone. I set my PS3 clock to 1:00 AM via the XMB. What the PS3 actually stores is the difference in time (-8 hours).
This would also explain why some people are seeing Dec 31, 1999 on their XMB. The internal clock can't return a valid date, so we get a default date like Jan 1, 2000 instead. Then the PS3 does the calculation (-8 hours in the example above) and we end up with Dec 31, 1999.

Actually, for the older models, it does not matter whether online or not. After first reading few pages of this thread, I took my PS3, which has not been online for a while since I refused to update firmware and was packed away in its original box because I am cleaning stuffs and want to put it away for a while, and turn it on and the problem occurs. Mine was on firmware 2.80, but still, so firmware version does not matter. I can manually change the date back, however, it does not help.

Mine's the 40gb, got it like less then a year after it came out. it should be old one?
Just done the RTC battery method and now everything is back to normal no more errors anymore
thanks

Although plausible, i'd say unlikely due to the fact that why would it 'Infect' the main user and not the new user. i dont think its a virus, just a bug. in any case, I do confirm removing the internal battery works, jut did it and it seems like nothing happend for now, but not everyone can do this workaround.
The funny part is (actually "will be"): Sony has already understood that this problem is related with February's being short as 28 days. When the time goes to March 01, the problem will be automatically fixed and Sony will come up saying: We have solved the problem, thank you for your patience.
This bug comes following the release of the PS3 exclusive game Heavy Rain - monumental coincidence/incompetence, or foul play?
Absolutely fuming. Utter disgrace.
Won't this still be screwed up if we wait because it will be march 2nd and the ps3 will still be a day behind or wont that be the case?
what the heck?! We are in 2010 and we are still talking about date bug?! Oh my God! -.-
Unfortunately for Sony, they didnt know about Freescale's programming bug when they used their chips in the PS3's.
Now Sony is getting the full on blame. Must suck to be them today. Here's the line of code on the Chip... anyone spot the messup?
Code:
year = ORIGINYEAR; /* = 1980 */
while (days > 365)
{
if (IsLeapYear(year))
{
if (days > 366)
{
days -= 366;
year += 1;
}
}
else
{
days -= 365;
year += 1;
}
}
I have a phat 160g demonstration model that got screwed by this bug too, which makes it highly unlikely that Sony did this on purpose (it's hard to sell a PS3 if the kiosk model is screwed). The demo models also have different firmware than their retail counterparts. Let's just hope the bloody thing works tomorrow.
my ps3 three phat never been hooked up to the net with factory 2.7 fw is having the same problems it has to do with february having 28 days kinda like the Y2k bug but within the dating lol THE ps3 failed i want my money back lmfao
It's funny how just a date mess up affects so much of the console.
Mine went down today 1/03/2010 at 3pm wont let me do a thing.
I'm disgusted with the general lack of development of the PSN, I am constantly being signed out, also my mates. This is just a long line of slip ups from sony. I am getting to the point where i'm just going to sell the lot and get a bloody XBOX as they dont have these problems and there online play is smooth. The lag on games like COD MW2 is shocking.
Why cant they spend a bit of time to sort it all out, instead of saying its free so what more do you want?!? This will be just another crap reason to try and get us to pay for this PSN service, I think we pay enough for the general line rental along with the games we buy. Stop being so greedy SONY and sort it out, we should not be having these issues!!

Well, since the certificates are made on a certain date, and then expire on another date - if it is out of range (ie, date is before creation date), its going to hose - a lot!
What's worry some is that, unlike your NES, that you can play forever - how long after the PS3 goes end of life, 10 years from now - you might not be able to play any games on it, or watch any movies - due to certs that were never updated.
Hopefully come end of life, Sony pushes a FW update to set the cert expiration date to a few hundred years in the future!
I guess the Maias got the date wrong.
From Gamethirst.com: Sony is narrowing down on what caused the world-wide PSN collapse, stating “possible unauthorized access” may have been the cause.
Yesterday, gamers around the world began reporting that they were receiving an error code, 8001 1050 F, that rendered their systems, (including mine) inactive. The giant went to work right away, stating they would have everything fixed by this morning.
Quote:
|
“We have found out that there has been a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PlayStation®Store through PCs, a content download service of the PlayStation®Network. Although unlikely, it is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PlayStation®Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users’ personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PlayStation®Store. PlayStation®Network accounts do not display entire credit card numbers, so any unauthorized access to your PlayStation®Network account is very unlikely to compromise your credit card number,” the giant said through a release on its US PS Website.
“We have taken immediate measures to rectify this issue and system security is restored.
We have investigated the extent of unauthorized access and possible alteration of passwords that could have occurred before corrective measures were taken, and are directly contacting customers who may have been affected by this incident. In order to verify that your account is intact, we strongly suggest that PlayStation®Network users sign in to the service. If you can successfully sign in with your pre-set password, your account is not affected by this incident.”
It appears now that all Slims are working, while PS3 phats are still having issues.
This should be over soon. We’ll keep you posted.

If any of this is true, this is just another reason why hackers ruin gaming for all the honest, real players.
Fixed 60gb european fat just now, back to normal
Wow i thought my system took a dump and i was prepping to go buy another.

Hahahahaha...apparently they did. =) (Mayans)
I think that while we can all sit here and blame Sony for these issues, we should just all be patient. They made a mistake...every company has made a mistake at some point in their tenure (for all of you spouting off that you want to go get an Xbox...red ring of death, anyone?)
I think the real measurement of how annoyed the PS3 users are going to be is how Sony handles this. give away something free, I don't know. PR is really going to have to be on top of something this major.
i have put out my battery, after a few minutes i have put it back into the ps3. then i have start the console, i must set the time and date. now i can log in to the ps network, but i can`t start my hdd and blu ray games.
i tried to download a demo from the store, after installing i tried to start it. but nothing happens, it`s just booting up a black screen. and this happen to all my hdd games (my own & 2 Shared accounts). my blu ray games aren`t under the game table (maybe the lens is not clean), i will try to clean the lens later.
my ps3: 40GB CECHG04
now i`m here with the ps3 from a friend. he have a 40 GB ps3 too, but another modell. his hdd games don´t work, but his blu ray games without trophy support are booting normally. the games with trophy support aren`t working.. another 2 friends of me with the 80 GB model, don´t have any problems.
so what the heck is going on? i don`t believe that a hacker is the reason for the problem. i think it`s sony. they send a bug to the fat ps3`s. and they will bring out an update to fix the problem. and this update will include something to block the otherOS support.

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

its probably a conspiracy. They figured that if the ps3 was hacked they would be able to fix it because everyone on a fat PS3 would have to upgrade it or do something else (remove battery).
Now when they release this patch nobody will be able to use the other os option. I think its funny that they figured this out for the slims but not the fat ones. If Sony never changed anything then the slims would be affected.
I am not trying to analyze, so this was just for fun. Nobody has to analyze it.

I am guessing the culprit of this issue is not the same hardware/software in the slims. I am no programmer or hardware person I am just talking to have fun.

This clearly shows how BAD is all this DRM / cert stuff for us customers and how we're TOTALLY in hands of the big corporations with zero protection of our money invested in games / videos / music / eBooks etc.

I'm going to - just because I can !
Basically, the slim does use a different System Controller (that, controls the RTC) - so it's possible any bug would be noticed and fixed - which begs the question, why wasn't it fixed on older boxes?
The answer is - unlike say, on a PS3 TOOL who's System Controller has flash memory, the Retail/Debug PS3's System Controllers are only partially able to be updated. The main code is ROM, and it can read some patch data via its EEPROM. The question becomes, can they update the RTC code, or not?
If not, there will be a TON of pissed off people - I think Sony may be waiting this out and hoping it fixes itself - if not, be prepared for either a Fat -> Slim trade in (also fixes that "pesky" OtherOS issue), free repairs, or just open the box, pull the battery, and reset it- not saying it wont happen again though!
40GB FAT
Bought in April 2008
European Version
No problems at all. I can play all my games, can connect to PSN etc....
Date/Time is fine.
Got some trophies and synched my account.
Lol... almost can't believe that... even sony says EVERY phat is having this error!
Ok so the general consensus is that this is a hardware issue related to the system clock. The understanding seems to be that this should self correct at a certain point in time and that Sony may just wait it out then take credit.
My question is this...won't this just happen again?
As a customer, if this is a hardware issue, i want it fixed at no cost to me (and as little downtime as possible). This is like the Toyota problem but no one has died (yet). Can you imagine if Toyota was like, "bring in your car and trade it in for a newer model, but give us some money too" or "Bring the car in for a recall but pay our mechanic to switch the pedal." People would riot.
The saddest part of all this is that im coming here for up-to-date information on the issue instead of to Sony... whats that say about their support? No offense to this site, its great, but why doesnt Sony simply have an easy to access page telling you the status of PSN/known issues. I spent 15mins trying to find anything on their site about this issue then came here.
Honestly its remotely funny how they keep updating their twitter/blog with information i found here first. O Sony, its an RTC problem... really? I figured that out on PS3news.com 12 hours ago! I'm beginning to think they come here to look for solutions/causes instead of actually working on it.

My phat PS3 (European 40GB) is just fine - still, I won't connect it to my home network (and subsequently to the internet), from this moment on, while they don't fix this issue.

Jesus, it's free. Quit complaining about Free. Long line of slip ups? Explain please.
Get off of your couch for 2 days and let the rage release. You sound like you could use some fresh air.
Alright, I have worked out multiple theories as to why the PS3's are crashed based on available information. Boss feel free to move this to the front page if you wish. First off; as far as we know only fat PS3's are effected; (Forgive me if I am incorrect, that doesn't hurt my hypothesis, but does poke holes in my solution).
That all PS3's went down yesterday 2-28-2010 at around 5PM Eastern. Also that PS3's are effected whether or not they are on the internet. That only a few games work currently, and trophies are down. PSN, is still up; and that some systems were bricked as a result.
Now that we know that, lets review possible theories.
1: Sony is trying to stop Geo Hotz hacking.
Though at first this seems likely, 'Maybe Sony made a mistake when trying to block hacking of the ps3' you might say. But even though I also believed this before it's now impossible. Sony couldn't have bricked consoles that were offline, and since that problem is arising, it's obviously not some online update or anything related to being connected.
2: A problem with the latest firmware.
Again, this one is possible, but not likely. The theory goes that since the date on the PS3 was set to 1999, there was a problem in the latest firmware. What the problem is no one knows, but some speculate that because Sony changed the father files in the PS3 to say 'PS3' upon start up instead of 'Sony computer entertainment' Sony might have screwed something up. I find this unlikely. Just changing two basic files isn't likely to crash an entire system this far after the changes. So I find this unlikely.
3: The Date & Time Problem of K2Y.
Simply put, when Sony wet up the PS3 they accidentally screwed up when programing the calender they messed up 2010 with a leap year. Which may explain why the PS3 had the problem happen on the twenty-eighth of February. However, this doesn't account for the fact that resetting the date doesn't fix the console. On top of that, 1999 isn't a valid year for it to be set to in the first place. It wasn't programmed into it.
4: Sony was hacked?
Sorry to admit this, but the best theory I have is that Sony must have been hacked. Sony may have had a hacker put some files that were set to activate at a specific date. Which if you take into account that the PS3 slim hasn't been effected, means that all firmware after 3.0 has this problem. So the only thing I can assume is that the PS3 will start working again if Sony releases an update with the Slims architecture. Sorry, but this is the only theory that explains everything. The 1999 date, all the license rights being void, the discs inability to start up, trophies being deleted. You name it, this explains it.
What can I do?
First off, I recommend not playing any games you have that you want to keep your trophies on, even if they do work.
Don't turn on your ps3 if you can avoid it for the time being, lord knows you don't want your system bricked. Wait for the latest firmware to come out, then make sure it's unplugged from the internet when you turn it on the first time. This doesn't matter if you already turned on your ps3, and finally...
Go out and spend some time with friends or your Girl friend instead, don't have one? Get one, (Or a Boy friend).

Surely the RTC supplying incorrect date / time to PS3's firmware could be fixed by firware patch itself to simply accept that incorrect date and work around it. As long as you're aware of this icorrect input it should be possible to handle it.
Funny thought that nobody in the whole thread so far mentioned (although VERY very slim / remote) chance of using this bug to exploit the system NOW!?

Common people - the opportunity is closing soon LOL
Hmmm, I've been reading about this at work today and have just fired up my 60GB Uk first release model expecting to see the problems listed and... its working absolutely fine

I have been on PSN and tried all my games and everything works, date shows up fine? I haven't had the PS3 on for a couple of days but am surprised its behaving!
I started my 60gb (upgraded to 300gb) Phat up yesterday. Played White knight cronicles online, no problem whatsoever! Watched a dvd with the misses no hassle at all. Just wondering is this a problem for people who are not on GMT 00.00??
Just a thought.
i can confirm that i now sony have fixed my phat ps3 remove the lid lift the disk drive up slightly there is a little flat green thing this is what looks like a bios batt on your computer unplug it for a couple of minutes then plug it back in reasemble your ps3 and hey presto my new modern warfare 2 works fine!!
these instructions are for the phat ps3 80gb there may be slight variations but i think that it will be a simelar procedure on all happy gaming all

ps to get the black cover off to get to the screw heads there is a little screw on one side then it slides off good hunting ladies and gents

It's #3, namely - the date that you actually set via the XMB may not be updating the System Controllers date - if the System Controllers date is out of range, it may not be able to be updated until its first within range - if that makes any sense at all.
By pulling the battery, and rebooting - it asks for the correct date (it detected the reset of the RTC), which is then set and fixed!
Guys my ps3 60g fat upgrade to 120g is without internet connection for a month and its working fine with correct date, i'm confused.
I was so lucky by not playing yesterday!!!

I was about turning my PS3 on and play some video games, but I wasn't able to do that 'cause I was making my family's "annual house make over".
Now I read in every forums and news that a lot of people are having this problem, I'm so sorry for you guys, I just hope Sony can fix this ASAP, so you all can come back to the regular gamer life.
I've also read that the battery solution works, but I'd recommend not to do such a thing if your PS3 is still under warranty, just wait a few hours more, maybe a day, and let's see how things move (Your life won't be over if you don't play another day, right?).
I don't think this is a Sony's strategy to avoid the, so well known, exploit, it seems to me that Sony just got hacked, as mentioned above by
CyanCaze, I completely agree with you my friend.

I don't want to trade my FAT. I paid more (a lot more) for this and I intend to keep it.
If they come with that trade bs I want 10 free BD games with that!
Guys my ps3 60g fat upgrade to 120g is without internet connection for a month and its working fine with correct date, i'm confused im from greece and the only problem that my ps3 ever have was a ylod from my mistake i forgot to connect the fan and the ps3 was very hot but i fixed by a tutorial from Gilksy 3-4 months ago and now its working fine and today i was playing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, i'm confused, i hope i help maybe if you want i upload and a video with the date to believe me.
it seems to me, that everyone who has not connect to PSN lately, especially on Feb 28 has fat PS3 working fine.
Fat PS3 EU 60GB 3.15 FW GMT+1, turned console on today with date 1/1/2000
STATISTIC:
Where are the most affected systems?
Anyone in Europe got the problem?
I have been considering getting myself a slim machine for a while now so i could leave the fat machine solely as a media center. This seemed as good a time as any so got the machine earlier today and transferred everything across and now i have no problems
People I know with the 2 usb port fat machines are connecting ok so it is not all fats that are affected by this, I think it is highly unlikely that they will remove the other OS option with the fix and we will find out in a couple of hours whether moving to 2nd March fixes the problem.
Out of curiosity i have a question for those using the other OS, what date/time does it show?

yes, we have the same problem here in Europe too.
No problem for me Europe-Greece.
Hi everyone, Guess older games works Like Dark Sector that I put it in my PS3 40 HDD and the game installed normally an I played it, but PES 2010 shows me that error and all games that I grabbed from PSN as well, except Aliens Vs Predator Demo, I am waiting for Sony to give us a solution as soon as possible. Sorry for my English.

There's a guy on my floor who has an 80 gb fat model that isn't messed up. so it's apparently just most models and not all models. that fact kind of makes me more confused because I don't understand why it's not happening to all fat ps3 models.
I made a new user account but i wasn't able to start any blu ray games. But i did get on the playstation store without a psn account.

Mines a 2 usb Fat, have been down for 24 hours. Probably has something to do with a slight revision to the RTC hardware received in certain small batches. Maybe a small handful of units (fats) got newer hardware that didnt have the problem.

Although i hadn't properly used mine, it was switched on for about 10 minutes yesterday and maybe 15 the day before, internet connection on and its still ok and its a first release 60gb so i'm wondering if the design change after that had the problem? anyone with an original 60 thats not working now?
Hey,
Just to let you know... I`ve fixed my PS3. Procedure: Remove the CMOS battery and plug again.
What will happen: At PS3 start, you`ll be prompt to set the new system date.
Obs.: The trophies are working normally and I didn`t lost anything. PS Store is working and I played online as well.

LOL, So this.... Man, we all understand the issue and impact here. I mean we all own to darn system and are just as concerned as the next guy. But man, you'd swear the world is coming to an end all within 24 hours over our consoles, lol... Someone could literally say " Man, did you hear? China just sent Nukes our way!!!" Yet, many of these types of player's would reply with " Well that sucks, is the PSN up yet though? ".
No one wants this fixed more than Sony themselves folks. We all see the month of March and we know what it means for our beloved system. The impact is far less on us than Sony and Dev companies who make our games. You want to see a real fire drill. Be in their shoes over the last 20 hours... Give it time.
Yeah, this again... I was playing MGS4 last night. Feels good man. Heck, I have Heavenly Sword here I need to play as well.

I have the GOW3 demo still on my console and I just played that just fine
its working now 23.35 uk time, however i've lost lots of trophies.
trophies back after sync 60gb fat back and working.

Finally! Its working for me, too :-).
40gb fat btw
huh funny thing was my 160gb phat ps3 was not affected what so ever and it will probably be fixed for the us people if it isn't already and if not? Oh well..
i love playin gta iv online sooo much fun.. tried to sign in yesterday but it wont let me nooo
Working here also! They fixed it, finally! Lol..
Can anyone state weather its a fw upgrade or what.. since they are claiming its working now ?
Getting reports from friends here in the US, their consoles are back up and running. Will check mine soon... good news.
Ok, just checked. Mine is up and running, logged into the PSN. The date says 2 29 2010........ I'm west coast USA.
I haven't turned on my PS3 yet today; I'm assuming PSN'll still be out of commission.
No upgrade, just like it never happened, Date was changed to 19/4/2020 that was it.

If this is the case then $ony have just lost a loyal customer. Because if this is how they reward you for years of supporting there systems the can feck off!!!

It's just you, trust me. Should be resolved tomorrow, have patience.
it's back and working fine, logged to PSN and the date is the 1st of march.
it fixed itself... SONY you are saved.
Eveyone, from the EU psn blog: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/03/01/psn-error-update/comment-page-19/#comments
Looks like it might be up and running... GOOD LUCK
40GB Fat, 2USB, F/W 3.15 : Working
No update was done. Resolved about 24hours of when it stopped working. It would appear Sony did nothing and the clock resolved the issue itself.
Hope they don't try to take credit for a fix.
Huh, really? I better check it out then, see if my PS3 can go on PSN alright.

Should be up? I mean I'm touching base with people all over the place. Even outside the US.
i can confirm psn is working 4 me in scotland just switched ps3 on and i signd in
Here's what the last 24 hours has felt like for many of us... lol. If you know the movie. You understand.
Mine is working just fine. I did have one thing differently than everyone else... my date was actually reset to 2/28/2010 7 pm (eastern) but that fixed pretty quickly with an update via internet.
if you lost any of your trophies just try to sync them (compare trophies with friend),and they will be back.
everything is back to normal.
Nice ploy by Sony, only the fat ps3's affected, download a patch to fix this bug, and oh by the way, we may as well close all holes, i ain't touching mine.
all back to normal only 24 hours after it went down, the themes and other dlc all working now.
If Sony says that they fixed the problem, its a lie. Every Fat PS3 fixed itself @ 12AM GMT, which is why your PS3 will be Feb 29 GMT time when you turn it on.
Sony didnt fix anything, the internal clock finished the bugged day so everything works again.
Just to prove they didn't do ANYTHING to help, if you've yet to turn your PS3 on, do so without it connected to online. If Sony did implement a fix, your PS3 should technically still not work, but it will work just fine.
7pm EST, all back to normal... guess the problem fixed itself.
SONY just confirmed that its fixed and its all back to normal , people that lost trophies just need to sync.
Fixed at 0:00 GMT+0
It's working.
Remember to sync your tophies!
i got no problems with my 120GB ps3 slim. works all fine in aussie. sony could release a firmware update to all ps3 phats or even fix up PSN and make it the right date plus copyright problems hopefully.
apparently it is fixed now... but wouldnt it have been crazy if this had turned out to be huge plot by sony to eliminate all of the fat ps3s out there. They could have made everyone send theirs in for a slim.

I live here in San Diego, not too far from Playstation headquarters San Diego and if this would have happened, first I would have stormed the building and stolen all that I could including the new MLB 10 game and then set the buildings on fire.
