Today PlayTV, the Digital TV/DVR addon unit for Sony's PlayStation 3, has been updated to version 1.21.

A minimum of PS3 Firmware 3.0 is required to receive the update, and changes include the following:

• Support for Dolby Digital + for HD channels
• The recording of HD channels is now possible
• Multi-channel audio replay.
• Improved Standard Definition
• Using remote play improved
• Support for reading distance mobile
• Support for the Australian Digital TV

To quote, roughly translated: In addition to finally make compatible audio codec, movie fans can save their favorite series or movies in High Definition using the MPEG-4 HD. In contrast, export records in the XMB leads on an incompatible file.

Sony proves that patience is a virtue, the firm seems to refine each update box to take advantage of new real users.

Go to the menu "Update" your PlayTV to begin installing the software 1.21.

Encouraging news! However, since it has taken over a year to be enabled for Australia, is it another year's wait before it can reach the African shores?

Currently the PlayTV gadget is available at an exploitative price of about 110 pounds in South Africa from some dealer and I guess with very limited functionality! I think Sony should act faster and put an end to this.

Their concept of making it beyond a mere gaming machine is good, but how can one go on convincing the wife that the PS3 is a family gadget when she has to wait 3 years to appreciate its relevance. Without the Playtv, Ps3 will have no relevancy to my wife, period!
