Recently we learned that the PS3 Slim didn't lose the OtherOS and Linux functionality due to a security hole, however, many were left wondering why Sony ditched them.

Today Sony's Satoshi Hashimoto, in an interview with Impress Watch, confirmed that Sony will not be removing the OtherOS and Linux functionality in old (non-Slim) PlayStation 3 consoles.

Until now, many feared Sony would remove the functionality from older PS3 systems via PS3 Firmware 3.0 or a future update.

Additionally, he stated that there isn't an issue with the feature leaving a security hole...

Similar to both the Petitboot Bootloader and pdaXrom-NG Bootloader for PS3 Linux, the OurOS project in development is a Linux-based user interface for the PS3.

Petitboot is a graphical bootloader for the PlayStation 3. In 2007 the initial Petitboot Bootloader for PS3 was released.

In 2008 the developers Benjamin Herrenschmidt and Jeremy Kerr updated it to v0.2 (rename to otheros.bld to install) which is available here:

This weekend Sashz has updated the previously-released OtherOS pdaXrom-NG Bootloader v0.1.2 with a new revision, dated 20090417.
