Also, I copied your post to the Site News so more people will see it and to answer: yes, it opens fine for me in Win32 (XP Pro) so I took a screenshot of it and added it to the news post. :tup2:

for me the exe run on xp SP3 32bits.
But i don't know why we need to have a broken icon ?
What can we do with this icone ?

This is basically just to get those who had issues with the other up to the point the rest of the people are... as of yet, nobody except for Giulio19992 is able to recreate what is in the video using this method. The latest updates are posted in the 'Notice' area of the Chatbox.

Copies your system backup, copies and renames the .pkg file, and then copies the files in the correct order to get the Corrupt icon on your ps3

Limitations:
Only works with up to, 10 archive2_XX.dat (where x stand for 00, 01, 02, 03, 04 ,05 ,06, 07, 08 ,09 ,10)

this whole "project" seems very weird to me and looks like it won't lead to anything useable...

oh, then i got it working, yesterday i tried to do this with the run.bat, at the end i got a corrupt icon, so i thought it wasn't as it should be. i'm glad it worked then :)

Most projects aren't intended to be an "all-in-one" instant hack for the PS3, in actuality this one, the HDD data one, the PS3 Portal one, and several upcoming others are geared for experimenting on specific areas or for the interest of learning.

It seems many are misguided that there is one project only to hack the PS3, this simply isn't the case as now others are getting involved.. which is really good news indeed.

Most of the PS3 Devs are busy with their own projects and have little time to get involved in others projects, while balancing life, jobs, education, family, etc in the mix.

In summary, when the lead PS3 Devs here have news/breakthroughs they will post on it as they always have... but during the time between their progress updates is when other projects are great for those who enjoy tinkering with the PS3. ;)

Not that we know of yet... all this does is help those who haven't made it as far as you get up to speed pretty much. :cool:

Right, so i haven't actually tried this myself yet (would have to swap out my 320gb for my 60gb, format etc!, haven't had time) but i have been reading recent news/forum posts etc...

To clarify:-
1. This tool simply takes a backup of your PS3 and manipulates it so that when restored back to your PS3 again you will have a corrupted icon showing up. (nothing more, nothing less)

2. This isn't of much use to the general public (yet).

3. No, it isn't a dam iso loader!

4. NO, IT ISN'T A DAM ISO LOADER! :rolleyes:

This project is here to see if the concept is viable, or if any problems are encountered. As stated elsewhere it is for investigative purposes for future projects.

If you want an iso loader - don't bother with this as it is of no use to you at all! (although your testing may help lead to full access to the ps3, which may in turn unfortunately lead to piracy on the ps3)

Yea,.. the confusion has spread wildly..

Before the beta test and the beta test itself was not about renaming a .pkg to .dat, i guess it was just backing up your hdd, formatting it, backing it up again, and replacing one or two files from the first into the second.

then after the beta test the whole renaming .pkg's came about...and we are still yet to see anything about an algorithm as referenced in the first post...



but we will see

there's evidently some factors we need to fine tune and finalize in the process. Perhaps you could get information from your friends who got it working... like if they all used the same pkg file etc...so we could try to identify the variable that makes the difference between working and not working.

i'll try on my end to do the same.

Has anyone managed to successfully install a pkg and play it?

If I've followed this project correctly it looks to me like those tools are only "injecting" some (random?) bytes which the PS3 doesn't refuse when restoring the backup.

But as far as I've understood your efforts you don't know the encryption algorithm or the key which is used by the PS3 to decipher the backup so the entire project won't result in a possibility to inject homebrew code, will it?

Please don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the hard work done by some members here!

yeah, I thought that this hack was a software that would actually decrypt the backup files, then inject a package in the file's structure... as if that pkg was already downloaded into the PS3 before the backup was made, then it would reencrypt the whole thing... As far as I can tell, all it does is take one of the files from the backup and replace it with a pkg *as is*, and apparently the PS3 accepts it and installs the pkg (for some people at least...).

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but this doesn't seem to be something that could lead anywhere. Having the backup decrypted/injected/encrypted would make for a much safer alternative solution since this can't be patched by Sony, and it would allow us to inject anything into the PS3...

By the way, quick question, does the backup also contain the firmware? I never tried restoring a backup, but does it free the disc then just copies back the games/movies/music/pictures into the file system? or does it "format" the whole disc, reinstalls the firmware that has been backed up as well as the games/movies/music/pictures? In other words is it just a fancy/encrypted PS3/GAMES+PS3/MOVIES, etc.. directory structure, or is it actually an image of the whole disc ?

Moderators should post a summary (in comprehandable English) of what the so far called 'hack' is supposed to provide (original Giulio's post contains stuff like the HDD encryption has been broken - was it?). The aim of the tool being dealt in this thread would be much more clear... The question looms here - do mods know and understand at all what Giulio achieved?

Yes, I totally agree. The main idea behind all efforts should be to find exactly this solution. That would give us the possibility to develop custom firmwares and homebrew applications. I'm quite sure that the real geeks dealing with this decryption stuff don't want to build some kind of iso-loader or find a way to copy paid .pkgs.
As far as I know it is a compressed image of the whole disc. But as I understand this "http://www.ps3news.com/PS3Dev/newer-ps3s-go-to-128mb-flash-from-512mb-hdd-storage-used/", a small part of the firmware is stored on internal flash storage. Probably, it's just the loader with some kind of emergency operating system.

We only know what everyone else does... it's Giulio19992's project, so it is up to him to keep everyone (including Mods) updated on any progress as it happens.

I myself am not directly involved with this project, and based on the feedback from the past week what Giulio posted doesn't appear recreatable by others so chances are good it will idle where it has been from until someone can reproduce the same results. :sleep:

The important thing for this so called exploit to work, its to be able to decrypt and encrypt the backup data again, so it can be recognized by the hypervisor. No one else as far as i read in this forum, has been able to recreate guilio's work, but maybe it has a lot of ppl, and ppl that really understand thinking on ways to explore more of this. Time is on our side, so lets all have more patience.

The question I am asking is: do we know what are we trying to recreate? Is it broken icon or get a package installed by "injecting" it into backup?

When the program is able to pack a few files in the pkg?

I understood it as his goals with the project were:

1) Injecting PKG files into the back-up
2) Making back-ups work across multiple consoles

However, perhaps others think differently which may be right also. Needless to say my Italian to English is beyond rusty. :wacky:

Did you read anything before posting that? It's a Windows application, so PS3 Firmware is irrelevant for PS3 Backup Tool 1.0. :rolleyes:

Also, since the process itself never actually worked for anyone besides Giulio19992 I think it's time to close this thread now. :cool:
