A Japanese blog has done a technical analysis of both Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, and the Final Fantasy XIII Trial Edition.

To quote: The Blu-Ray movie comes in at about 30GB due to a video bitrate of 27.8Mbps, and audio bitrate of about 1.9Mbps.

The demo however comes in at a huge 5.09GB (including 256MB of PS3 Update Data), which is very worrying, especially for Xbox 360 owners as the demo only has about an hour of gameplay.

Further analysis of the files in the demo show that there are two big movie files, one of which is 2.04GB (z016_ps3.wmp), and the second is 2.37GB (z000_ps3.wmp). This means that 4.41GB of the demo is just video.

Final Fantasy games are known for having a lot very high quality CG rendered movies, this means that the Xbox 360 version of the game will have to have lower quality video. Or another option is to take the route of Lost Odyssey, which had only one or two rendered movies, and the rest were in-engine. Despite this, Lost Odyssey still ended up using about 27GB of data due to repetition of textures, character models, and environment models.

So does this mean that the Xbox 360 will be getting a worse version of the game? Or does it mean that the PS3 version of the game will be downgraded in order to accommodate the Xbox 360 version?

Confirmed: Final Fantasy XIII Demo Consumes 5.09GB of Space

There is no need for the videos to be that big so the 360 will have smaller ones with the same quality, also the 360 can stream data faster than the PS3 this is why most games install data onto the HDD because blueray is to slow for streaming so the 360 will be fine probably will have more than 2 discs but hey that's nothing to worry about.

The video quality is still going to suffer if the videos for the 360 version are smaller in size, and its simple logic that there just isnt got to be as many on the xbox 360 as on the ps3, otherwise you will have to swap the 360 disc for every 2 or 3 long cgi videos.

If they include the cgi, it will be a lot lot more than 2 discs, 6 plus at least, and if they shorten the cgi or lower the quality, and delete some cutscenes that remain "exclusive" to the ps3, then it will still be around 4 discs.

Sure, the videos can be 1080p for the PS3 and 720p or 480p on the 360 that can then be upscaled, that way they will save some disk space but the quality will be degraded in the eyes of the HD crowd or they can do what Sega did with the Saturn and have a big ugly black frame around the video to make it smaller but the same quality.

Data streaming is no big deal since most textures can be stored on PS3s HDD and code doesn't take that much space on disk.

The most likely scenario is that all video will be 720p for both consoles on the American and European version while it may be 1080p for the japanese one.

Even then I guess FFXIII on Xbox 360 will be at least 3 DVDs in line with other RPG releases on the console.

However I do expect some hiccups on the 360 version mostly with draw distance, textures and shadows since both consoles handle them differently but nothing major.

We might really get the same quality versions on both consoles but my guess is that they won't be as flashy and good looking as Killzone 2 in the graphics department in order to be able to keep the quality on par on both consoles.

It would be really funny to see "Requires 8GB - 30GB (or more, depending on number of discs) HDD installation space" on back of the Xbox 360 game cover. Square Enix aren't going to do something as stupid as that, just to save disc swapping and quality because what will people with an arcade do.

* The demo should be played with the understanding that this is FF13 as it was in 2008. The game has move forwards much since then, and the developers are now in the ‘Final Stretch’ of many aspects of development.

* The demo uses around 50% of the PS3’s power - the final version will use close to or the full 100%.

This only means one thing: It can only get worse for the 360 version.
Time will tell. Maybe they'll just release the PS3 version earlier anyway in the rest of the world.

people keep saying "will the ps3 version suffer" when really the ps3 version of the game is pretty much finished!

some minor tweaks that SE need to do and then there starting on the 360 version, there treating them both like two separate development titles, so it will come down to efficiency on the 360 disc(s)

im a ps3 user, and cant wait for this to come out! im confident that the quality on the ps3 version wont be downgraded to compensate for the 360's lack of BD.

i think the best thing for SE to make a good 360 version is to maximise on techniques used for efficiency and to use multiple discs.

its not ideal for 360 owners but can you really be that predantic after having FF7, 8 and 9 using multi discs without complaint?

in the end, the ps3 version wont suffer because of MS and the 360 version will just have to b efficiently compressed to minimise the amount of discs used

thats just my (realistic) honest opinion

I completely agree, the Xbox 360 version of the game has to suffer because Square Enix will have to make cut backs somewhere for the game to run efficently and be practical.

I had this conversation with a friend a few weeks ago and we both think it is going to be released on the PS3 first worldwide, they've not really started much on the Xbox 360 port, so working out a plan for the 360 version of the game, physically taking the time to port it over, find a way to tweek it to run as close to the PS3 version while getting the shading and details right etc is going to take time.

Because Square Enix are starting to support the PS3 with early releases and exclusives, like the FF7 japanese PSN release, japanese early release for FFXIII etc, and the recent "only on playstation 3" text at the end of the demo, it makes me wonder how long the game will be out first for the PS3.

If Square rushed the production of the 360 version of the game, the PS3 version will still have been out months before.
