ZDNet Australia recently released updated browser speeds, as measured by the industry-standard SunSpider JavaScript test, and the results should give pause to proprietary-browser makers Microsoft and Opera Software:

Every open-source browser completely obliterated the proprietary browsers in terms of performance, and by a huge margin.

The test compared Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1, Opera 10.00 Alpha, Firefox 3.1b1, Chrome 2.0.158.0, and the WebKit r40220 developer project included in Chrome and Apple's Safari.

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox (along with WebKit) left the proprietary competition in the dust:

Maybe there's something in the open-source water, after all, that makes those open-source browsers grow up big and strong. IE 8? Well, let's just say that it has a lot of work to do to catch up.

Well, I just do not expect anything fast from Microsoft. And, as for Opera, it is shame that now it became a not so good browser, because, once, it was a good alternative to IE.

Opera is a GREAT browser. Version 10alpha is the only browser that goes 100% by standards. Run the acid3 test to find out for yourself.

This speed test is total bs because they compare final versions with alpha (opera) and RC1 (IE). Even small kids know that alpha versions (not even beta!!!) are geared towards adding features and stability and not efficiency.

google chrome is good, but I just don't like the interface, and compared to firefox, there isn't enough add-ons, of course I could be wrong since I haven't really experienced it, but when the look gets as good as firefox, then i'll switch, in the meantime, screw IE and safari, wish i had firefox on my ipod
